Fred Cohen set out to create and run a set of structured experiments using "a computer program that can affect other computer programs by modifying them in such a way as to include a (possibly evolved) copy of itself" for a computer security seminar.
Len Adleman, Cohen's PhD supervisor is credited with proposing the name "virus".

ghoti is another spelling for fish (GB Shaw, I believe, originated this as a demonstration of the difficulties in the English language).
The 'gh' is the sound 'f' from 'rough', the 'o' is the sound 'i' from 'women', 'ti" is the sound "sh" from 'nation'.

Actually the spelling is entirely consistent. It was George Bernard Shaw who was incorrect.
"gh" from cough - The F pronounciation can only occur if the GH is at the end of a word, not at the beginning.
"o" from women depends on the accent. I know people who pronounce the o as oo and those that pronounce it as u.
"ti" as in nation only occurs if followed by the on as well.
ghoti must, if following the rules of the English language, be pronounces goatie - thus GBS is incorrect.
