we'll try to get you a fresh one as soon as we can because the patty on this one fell on the floor.
No, seriously, one of our partners sent us some corrupt files.
I told them.
They said they already knew.
... Soooo... why did you send them when you knew they were corrupt...?

hoping against hope that you wouldn't actually look at it for a few days. I know of a student who used to rename pictures with "My Term paper1.docx" MSWord would have a cow trying to open it. and he would get a few more days to work on said paper.
Student syndrome. They aren't done yet and probably sent something along that line is my first guess in situations like this. I quite often open in NotePad++ and look to see if the headers say something different than the file extension says.

Waiter brings a steak dinner to the table, and has his thumb on the steak.
"Waiter, why do you have your thumb on the steak?"
"So it doesn't fall on the floor again!"

It is now time to buy a second monitor.
I see that the word "refurbished" has appeared in this market now.
Can I get the opinions and experiences of those who have been there and done that ?
Is a refurbished monitor smart or stupid ?

You can save some money, but ... what you are getting is a product that has been returned by the purchaser and re-tested by the manufacturer. You don't get any idea why it was returned, or what the manufacturer did to it for resale.
Is it a lot of money you save? What's the warrantee length? Is it the "current model"? does it come with all it's cables, or do you have to factor that in as well? Original packaging - if not, then will it survive rough handling during the shipping process?
Avoid "as-is" in the description, and it's probably fine. But if I was only saving 10% or so, I'd go new to make my life easier.

OriginalGriff wrote: Is it a lot of money you save? What's the warrantee length? The warranty is critical -- if a unit doesn't have the original's full warranty, you don't want it.
A few years back I purchased a refurbished router -- it worked great for 9 months, then a lightning strike took out one of my trees (I found 3' strips of bark 150' away) and fried the router. The original had a 3 year warranty, while refurb had 6 months. I saved half on the refurb then paid full shot for a new one.
OTOH, with new units 1 in 10,000 has been inspected. For refurbs, every one has been inspected, so your likelihood of getting a lemon is much lower -- IF the warranty is good.

If the refurbished monitor comes with the same guarantee as a new monitor, and is significantly cheaper, it may be worth your while. However, I have seen new 4K monitors advertised (on Amazon) for USD 200-250, so even if refurbished are half price, you're not saving that much and are taking on a higher risk of failure.
I personally would go for new.

Don't buy refurbished unless it's a scarce item.
Or if you are buying a bunch and will have spares -- like if you need to set up a call center on the cheap.

Refurbished equipment is hit or miss. Be careful, check the warranty and return policy, the dealers rep (if possible) and stress it before warranty runs out.
I bought an D850, refurbished by Nikon and it's been great.
I bought a 2.2KW Huanyang CNC spindle, refurbished by them (supposedly one of the best) from Huanyang through Amazon and it didn't work. Got my money back from Amazon without any hassle.

For a monitor, I wouldn't bother.
Maybe it was returned for a problem that only occurs intermittently (for example, it might start to flicker when running hot), and the repair shop didn't find anything wrong with it 'cuz a repair shop never gets to spend hours using it.

I made the mistake of buying an "open box" monitor and I soon regretted it. The image was slightly blurred, and it was then that I realized that it had been returned for a reason.

Many "refurbished" products are actually returns, that they don't do anything to, and turn around and sell it as refurbished. Sometimes, they "fix" it, but most times they don't as it is not cost effective to spend more money on fixing it then it is worth in the first place.
I never buy refurbished anything, ever. Good luck to those that do.

We have had very good luck with refurbished stuff from Dell, but the savings on monitors can be pretty small. Probably have to catch them when they have a huge surplus (not so much these days). They usually have 15 day return policy and full warranty policy.
I do better on ebay but that can be a crap shoot.

Thank you each and every one
While the final verdict will take two years (that's the warranty period) to deliver, for the moment it looks like the pessimists win this one.
I could have driven over to any of five different stores in town and picked up a new one for about the same amount of money I spent on gasoline in search of a cable (and currently adapter).
In fact, I probably would have spent less money.
So, this fool and his money have been separated; although I guess I do have a nifty looking monitor; so I don't feel totally stupid; maybe fifty percent.
Quite a learning experience here. I'm guessing five or ten hours; about the same amount of money; and I could have achieved an even better experience and end result from only spending an extra forty-five minutes making a single side trip on the way home from work.
