No it was a SWAG - it's 76 characters which in turn is 118h which in turn means nothing to me

That's all you could come up with? You had 24 hours.
I was expecting something more creative!

I was considering base32 for the inner encoding, but I didn't feel like being the centrepiece of a public stoning.

I Need to get the magic numbers so that I can install my text editor on my new machine.
Vedit appears to be no more.
Phone: Wrong Number
E-Mail: No Response
Website: Broken Links
I am unable to locate a single human associated with Greenview Data (The Name of the Business Entity which is behind Vedit)
The weird thing: I can still download the installation and trial version of the package.
It seems quite a bit weird to keep my Windows'7 machine active for writing text, simply because I can't reinstall the pack on the new machine.
I really and truly like the Vedit Text Editor better than anything that has come along in the past thirty years.
I hope I don't have to make another downward move in my standard of living because of this.

What email did you write them to ?
I tried Richard's provided website link, and the only one appearing broken to me is the "products -> documentation" one.
Do you have maybe an account in which you have your magic number installed ?
Can't you read it out from somewhere on the old machine ?
Don't you have it deep burried in a email somewhere (how did you get it first place?)
OTH, wrong phone number is never a good sign...

Rage wrote: I tried Richard's provided website link, and the only one appearing broken to me is the "products -> documentation" one. Top Bar > Product > Documentation is broken
Top Bar > Product > FAQ Is broken
On the "...Resources and Other Links| vEdit..." page, the "...vEdit Forum..." link is broken
Same page, the "...Grey Matter..." page does not exist
Rage wrote: Do you have maybe an account in which you have your magic number installed ? Yes, I've had an account with Vedit since 1991; if memory serves me correctly. Ted Greene (Sp?) and I could recognize each other's voice on the phone without giving either one of us our name. My name appears on the web page of Customer Testimonials. To this day I say that Vedit still beats them all.
Interestingly enough, the website robot says that their database does not have my E-Mail address on file.
I say, huh ?
Rage wrote: Can't you read it out from somewhere on the old machine ? They use an installation number of something like fifteen digits. My customer serial number only has five digits. I can get that one from the menu on my screen
Rage wrote: Don't you have it deep burried in a email somewhere (how did you get it first place?) My E-Mail host demanded that I clean up my zillion zigabytes of old E-Mail; I am confident that the Vedit stuff was deleted with that purge.
I got my serial number from the company when I bought the thing, and upgraded through several iterations over several years (Decades, actually). My current copy of the program says that I'm eligible for upgrades through version 7.1 (they are currently at 6-point-something, and I have another 6-point-something).

OK, I reckon all this indeed looks suspicious.
They also have a sales@vedit.com email from the contact page, maybe it is worth a try.
C-P-User-3 wrote: I could recognize each other's voice on the phone without giving either one of us our name This is cool
I once printed out my TotalCommander license that I got per email by error, but for no reasons kept that print out - I also ditched the email since then, so this now yellow piece of paper served me several times already Germans say "Papier hat Geduld". (But I made a picture of it with my phone, just in case).

Thanks but that would be approximately the opposite of my purpose; it has a time limit on it.
And really, that time limit is about as fair and honest as they can be about it; if you like it, you can buy it, and if you don't like it, quit using it; and a sizeable fraction of those who do try it, do buy it, and I'm one of them.
I saw a $29 update/upgrade thing on the site somewhere. Maybe I'll get desperate.
At the moment, I'm just, well, like, majorly creeped out by the dead links, wrong phone numbers, E-Mail silence, and especially my disappearance in their database.

TAAA --- DAAAA
Thanks to all who tossed in some ideas.
I was able to get a message through.
Got an E-Mail back with magic numbers and the royal treatment.
I now have a fresh new copy of Vedit on my Windows 10 Machine.
Now I can rejoin the ranks of real nerds again.
Thank you each and every one.
We now resume our regular programming.

Thank you for the heads up. I just bought for $25.00. An incredible deal!
Knowing that it supports some Charities is the icing on the cake.
