While not dead (yet) I took great pleasure in getting out of their way. Gat a call from my last employer asking for some additional work/time. Told him I would put a LARGE dent in his budget, ahh peace and quiet, I love it.

Old products too.
Today with the "planed obsolescence" many products just suck and have almost no life cycle.
I am not that old and I already have had to say "things are not built as before" in many times.

Can't say I've read the article, but if NASA engineers can't work out Widget XYZ...then Widget XYZ was poorly documented. I can't imagine NASA not having enough red tape already. So how does this happen?

Given that the project was developed over 30 years ago, the developers who knew it and the whys and wherefores are either retired or dead. Chances are pretty good they don't even know the programming language used. It's not a case of the project being poorly documented. It's a case of bringing back the original engineers is a more effective way of making a change than trying to train up current staff to do it.

Tell them that if they come to interview
..ehr, I like VB6 and we once "almost" migrated a large VB6 project to .NET in chunks. Large project can't be rewritten all at once. But with the tools from MS, we could do it a module at a time. Meaning, no large rewrite, just an update now and then.
"Almost", because my manager insisted on doing a rewrite and killed the company. I had a working prototype that used VB6 and VB.NET, with parts of the flagship in VB6 and simple modules in VB.NET.
Hard part; there's no juniors with VB6, and there's an ocean between us. I could start in 2 months, and hard to micromanage someone who is an ocean away. I can afford one visit, but that's all my savings.
Still, feels like I could be of help. Find a junior that talks VB.NET; I can help with the rest. It'd be remote, ofcourse.
