I've experienced everything from -45F to 120F and I much prefer the warmer. Anything below 60F and my teeth start chattering.

Working in Ottawa, we'd go outside without jackets during lunch on a sunny spring day when it was 4C/40F. "This is a great day!"
After living in Dallas for a year, 68F/20C would make me say, "Sh*t, it's cold today!"

I've lived in the southern US for most of my life so my blood is thin.
For the past 36 years I've lived in Northeeast Florida and when it get in the teens it's funny to watch the people here. They break out the serious warm clothing and flip flops. 
The less you need, the more you have.

I have experience at both ends. One thing I notice is that the human body can get used to just about anything if given enough time and the right motivation.
Personally anything below -10f -23c is stupid cold. and anything about 95f or 35c is way too hot.
I love it around 50f or 10c. Perfect temp for working outside with just shirt sleeves and long pants.
To err is human to really elephant it up you need a computer

I bought my current car second hand 4 years ago - let someone else take the big chunk of depreciation, that's my motto - and I was really, really surprised to find that it's worth more now than when I bought it! And a big chunk too - about 50% more than I paid.
Apparently, lockdowns and chip shortages due to the pandemic mean demand is at an all time high, and that obviously drives prices spirally upwards.
But that's silly - it's not a collectable or anything, and I've used it for four more years since then.
Mind you, it's like rising house prices: good in theory if you are looking to sell, but since you'll have to pay more to find a replacement as well it's irrelevant.

Yup. Had been shopping to replace 1998 car when Covid hit. A month ago, when I realized we had only filled the gas tank once since then, we decided to get by with one car. When I sold it, the price had more than doubled in the one year. Good time to sell, bad time to buy. I think houses are doing the same in some locations.
If you can keep your head while those about you are losing theirs, perhaps you don't understand the situation.

chip shortages are not due to the pandemic. This is a China/mineral issue. This issue has been in the works way before COVID-19 was ever a thing.

I think there is also a flip side to the situation, if you get really lucky ...
The good lady needed a replacement car back in March and I thought that even if I didn't need to change, I would in the not too distant future. We thought, as you say, let someone else cover the depreciation and buy 2 x second hand.
Then, after some research I came across a great offer which prompted me to fire up Excel and compare all the associated costs for new vs second hand over a period of a few years.
Long story short, replacing with single new car was cheaper and we very rarely both need it at the same time. The car had been bought and registered by the dealership just before lockdown. So I'm guessing it was going to be used as a demonstrator but now it was just money tied up on their forecourt. It had under 9 miles on the clock and several thousand pounds off the normal price. I checked every other dealership in the country and couldn't find a price anywhere to match it.
Even got them to include a couple of extras we weren't expecting like 30 months roadside assistance!
For once, it seems an offer that looks too good to be true, wasn't. It's running just fine.

...and I'm absolutely clueless as to how to configure SmartGit (or similar) to use the new authentication process. I created a personal access token, but I still get warning emails.
And this page[^] and related links are rather useless or unintelligible to me.
I feel like an idiot, but I have no idea what I'm actually supposed to do, and how to do it?
Any suggestions?

I went thru this too and wrote up how to get it set up with a PAT (Personal Access Token) on StackOverflow : Authenticate with GitHub using a token - Stack Overflow[^] .
Figuring it out was inscrutable to me and I couldn't believe it when I finally figured it out.
It makes me feel better that someone as smart as you had trouble figuring it out too.
The main docs on it are really terrible. I couldn't tell my PAT from a hole in the ground.
