All the posts I've seen on this assume you are logged in to the remote box, I can't get past the login credentials dialogue as I can't enter anything - thanks anyway

Seems to me that I can click on "other options", enter stuff and tell it to remember my credentials. Then, it no longer asks.
If you can keep your head while those about you are losing theirs, perhaps you don't understand the situation.

My thought was that you enter it with the keyboard, one time. Then, a click.
I thought that you could get to the VKeb'd after log in. I don't have a surface, but the keyboard for my iPad doesn't add much to carrying.

I don't know what the Surface connection looks like, but on desktop - before making the connection - you can enter credentials.
RDP managers were mentioned above. I use one called "Terminals" that lets me organize the servers and workstations I remote to, & different credentials, & associate the two.
It does have a security option to require a password to open.
Became important when they took me away from programming and are trying to make an application admin out of me.
You don't want something else to carry, but what about a folio w/ keyboard as part of the cover?

Does this only happen for Full Screen Connections? Have you tried making it a Windowed Connection, with height and width set to the available screen size, allowing for your Taskbar (like a normal maximized Windowed app).

I ran into this problem a while ago you need to launch the virtual keyboard before you start the RDP session.
|
|

Try mRemoteNG - the one stop shop for all your remote sessions - does RdP, SSH, VNC....
You can set up protocol, port, user & password locally.
If you prefer to stay with Microsoft you can use RDP Manager which also allows the user & pass to be preset locally.
So old that I did my first coding in octal via switches on a DEC PDP 8
