I think I would agree with your colleague... in a way. But I would have to translate the statement to it's real meaning first...
90% is a pretty common go-to number when you are trying to say "a lot of" in percentage form. Give it a try and run a few fake conversations through your mind. If you want to say a lot, you will probably pick 90% (or maybe 99% if you REALLY want to emphasis a lot). So we easily translate that to "a lot".
Then take "the internet", in general conversation people are not really referring to the exact definition of the internet in terms of "a global system of interconnected computer networks" (wiki steal). Most the time we just mean "the stuff we do online". For example, reading news, or socialising in forums, etc. But it varies from person to person. One person might be a Facebook fanatic, another only reads articles on trusted news sites. So "the internet" can mean different things to different people.
So I think what is really being said is:
A lot of the stuff I see on the internet is wrong
...and to that I would have to agree. There is so much crap that people make up and post as facts, and people just believe it. Social media has brought us a world where people can say whatever they want, and not have to provide proof that it is real. It doesn't matter that 10% (a few) of people call them out on it, because the 90% (a lot) of people that believe it is a pretty good result.

What get's me about these micro SUVs etc is the AWD systems on them... my thumb is larger than the majority of their rear axles.
