What is the origin of the word "bucks"? I was thinking maybe greenbacks, but probably not. BTW in Russian (or in Belorussian) slang you may hear "baksi/baxi".

Back in the day people paid with bunnies.
A bunny was quickly called a "bugs" as in "Bugs Bunny" (yes, Bugs Bunny is older than the dollar!).
Of course the bunnies were traded for dollars.
Over time "bugs" became "bucks" as to not confuse a dollar with an actual bug.
Relating to the word "bug", the software term bug also comes from Bugs Bunny!
Although there's a strong rumor about it coming from actual bugs which would sit on the hardware and get fried it actually refers to Bugs Bunny who was really trolling Elmer Fudd (a hunter, why do you think we go "hunting for bugs"?).
Since software "bugs" are trolling developers and there's no greater troll than Bugs Bunny it makes perfect sense.
A quick Google would've told you the same

Good question, I went to ask Buck Dharma, who I found sharpening a Buck knife he was gonna use to skin a buck he'd just shot. He passed the buck by claiming not to know, nevertheless I offered him a buck or two for his time, but he declined, as he is one to buck the trends. The only positive that came out of the meeting was that neither of us was buck naked.

In the context of money? I had always heard it to be slang for a $1 note, where as "sawbuck" was slang for a $10 note. Since 1 is a portion of 10, such is the case that buck is a portion of sawbuck.

What does that make of Starbucks? You can't get an actual coffee for just $1.
Hypothesis:
The * character (asterisk) is also known as "star" (we all say * . * is star-dot-star, not asterisk-dot-asterisk), and us developers know that "*" is a placeholder for "all".
Thus, Starbucks is after all your money.

It is derived from the Dutch word "buk" which means stoop, so it means that the lower you stoop the more bucks you will have.
As you probably know also Wall street was a name first "coined" by the Dutch.
