"For such-and-such, press one" - no other options, so I push it.
It rings, it's answered: "Good morning, you are through to BLAH, my name is BLAH, how can I help you?"
"I need a BLAH, please"
"Postcode?"
"BLAH, house number BLAH"
"And your name?"
"BLAH."
"Thank you - it'll be with you in three to five days. Is there anything else I can help with?"
"No, that's all thank you."
"Then thank you for calling, and have a good day. Bye!"
"Bye!"
Total time, about a minute.
An efficient and helpful government? On a Monday?

2) What a strange coincidence that everybody's name is BLAH and that's even exactly what you wanted.
3) They need less than a minute now to retrieve all information they have on you and research your ancestors back for 50 generations, just in case.

The apocalypse isn't upon us, they just needed about a 100 years to streamline the manual and snail mail process.

The form itself is online as a PDF - but it has to be completed on paper, and sent in with supporting original documents, not scans or copies.
The "get them to post it to you" version includes a pre-paid envelope with the address - and the address bit is completely missing from the online version 
Let's not expect too much of a government department on a Monday...

And you are feeling copasetic about sending your original documents on the hope that they will send them back? I know I was somewhat anxious about that when I did my first passport, lo these many years ago.
