A self-taught rocket hobbyist (not a scientist, dear AP News) is about to blow himself up, by the looks of it.
One needs to generate a lot of force, whilst encased in a metal container that is being dropped from a balloon. If the direction is wrong, all that force will be pointing towards the earth, not away from it.

Well, actually I don't, but my wife wants one for a new business she's setting up and seems to think that in my capacity of being a 'computer person' I am suitably qualified to perform such a task, and thus have been instructed to do so. Ah yes, but I don't do web, I do .NET server side development.
So, in terms of function and services and databases and all that stuff I'm entirely comfortable, but when it comes to the 'cool' bit, the website and possible mobile app I get a bit lost. Someone told me (in the pub) that MVC 'was dead' and there's this new thing which you write in C# and it compiles it to JavaScript or something. Sounds filthy.
Is anyone able to suggest a way to go technology wise? Scale would be low, maybe a few hundred hits a day. I want to go completely bespoke, no CMS etc., and I wish to avoid anything requiring trendy haircuts like Python, Ruby, Java, etc. In other words something .NET ish which I can host on a server at home and not in the cloud.
Wisdom appreciated.

That really depends on the scope of the website's purpose. If it's just to display information, then the task ahead is very simple and can be done with pure HTML and CSS running on your webserver of choice. Now, if your wife wants e-commerce or marketing capability, the whole thing gets a lot more complicated and it's better to hire a professional to build it.

shouldn't be much harder than picking a new dress for her (or underwear if you're into danger) ...
I can only wish you the best.
Plan B: make something real ugly (or buy her a huge dress.)
Once the above exhausted point her at some young nephews / nieces / friends kids that have learned doing websites at school.

Really? MVC is dead? Personally, I would love it if I could write C# and compile it to Javascript, because that means I wouldn't have to write the javascript.

There has been a compiler written for C# to JavaScript. I don't recall the name, but do some Googling and you'll find it. I even think there was a second one as well.

Seriously, if you don't need a CMS, SquareSpace or its ilk is the way to go. Mostly easy and fun to use, with occasional teeth gnashing.

I don't know if I would use a service that calls itself squarespace, but has a giant black circle on their home page. It seems to me they won't get your requirements right.
