I like the iPhone - it works well though I think it a tad expensive. Having said that, my iPhone 6 is still going strong and I see no reason to upgrade until the phone stops working - it's over 3 years old and still works without a problem. I tried an android phone and it was ok but lacks the finesse of the apple product. Buy what suits your needs.

Because they can. The same could said about cars, breakfast cereal, pencils,... Let 'em buy whatever they want to, if they have the cash good for them. As for me I have a $12 flip phone, and I think that was $5 too much.

As a Bay Area tech worker, I would totally spend that much on an smartphone. Maybe not an iPhone, but the new Pixels are coming out in October, and my current Pixel XL is at least 6 months old.
Maybe you should just give one a try? They don't all cost over $1000. Get an Android, as a developer you can easily put your own apps on it. Then maybe it will make sense.

ASUS Transformer 10" Pad = $250
Samsung Phone = $40
Sony Walkman = $170
Digital Camera = $100

Total = $1060
Granted you cannot do pro stuff like you do on your Laptop, but Walkman and Camera (IPhone does have a really nice camera or so I've heard). Now given that most people are not devs and don't require that extra power behind their laptop and really need a full-blown laptop. Not to mention you can put it in your pocket use for a full day on a tiny battery compared to all the batteries required by all other gadgets. With no baggage and everything fitted into one place, for most people this is just a good purchase with little fuss.
Personally I'd never buy a $1000 Phone on principle. The best thing to do is wait a couple of months and all the companies will follow suite and make a competing powered phone for a little less. Wait a whole year and you can get same specs for half the price from a brand.

I agree with you 110%! I have exactly what you have (are you my doppelganger?) except a trak phone for emergencies only. Apple does not need my hard earned dollars!

It is more or less a fashion. Some people really like it while some do not care. I think that android have more functionalities and easier to navigate.

It is all of the "hipsters" wanting to be "cool". It is the same phenomenon as the fools riding bicycles on congested city streets, during peak traffic hours, risking their lives in the process.
(btw you never see them riding when it is raining  )
They are like dim sheep following the latest trend and Apple marketing gurus take advantage of it gearing their ads to the hipsters.
It is a clear cut case of form and appearance over functionality.
To quote the sergeant from the movie "M.A.S.H", "I'm too old for this sh*t".
It's hell getting old... but it beats the alternative!

The Insanity is amazing. I used a TREO. back then, very expensive by comparison.
But I had all my data transfer over from my palm device. It was worth it. I knew someone who spent DAYS re-entering info into their phone.
If that is your argument. I get it. Time is money.
My daughter can type 50 WPM on her iPhone (5s)... The samsung keyboard is not that good, I will admit it. But I have a computer when I have any amount of typing to do. I don't even like to SURF on my phone.
I love a phone with all my contacts, and a chance to get to my emails (especially when Irma takes down the power, and you are traveling). The camera is nice on the phone. I don't video chat.
I see a SMART phone as a useful tool. I can see spending $200 - $500 depending on usage, expecting to keep it 2-4yrs...
But I agree... $1,000 on a phone... One that has KNOWN flexibility issues... (Pun Intended)
Is insane. That is more than I paid for my first 2 cars (each).

Don't forget to mention the fact that Apple claims (in court) that users can't expect this to last more than a year? Plus, they are claiming that it is not a design flaw nor a manufacturing flaw.
So, you could shell out for Apple's planned obsolescence OR get an Android phone at half the price that does pretty much the same things but will last for years. It's a no-brainer.

So I just noticed Windows 10, and I just tried searching around for a solution or setting toggle, doesn't display a notification when updates are downloading?!
Am I missing anything here? I hate this because just when I am about to turn off the computer, I check the windows update and its in the middle of a download. I can see end users doing this (just turning off their computer without checking windows update) often and never completing downloads and it never getting updated. Most of the headaches I have encountered with Windows 10 is mostly with updates.

You are probably correct but I haven't verified this. It would still be nice if it told me to leave on the computer until the updates are finished, if possible. Next time I turn it on, I could get compromised because I didn't know to finish the update

What I've seen is the windows icon, when right clicked and choosing "Shutdown or sign out" is that one of the choices mentions "updates" and shutting down. Maybe that's not showing for you? or it got broken in a recent update?

So I left the new dell machine on while I left the office yesterday and it was downloading updates. I come in this morning and it is asleep (I didn't touch any sleep settings yet, so these are preconfigured settings). I turn it back on to see if you are correct and it only has Sign Out, Sleep, Shut down, Restart while Windows update screen says "Installing 93%".
So it still shows no notices about Windows Update in progress while clicking on the menu to shut down.

This update results in the debugger randomly crashing, at least when debugging Docker containers.
I've seen other reports of debugger issues, but they keep getting closed because the user doesn't send a dump. I tried, but I couldn't reproduce the issue for the recorder, but it does keep happening.
I'll follow up if a workaround or later update fixes the issue.

We were defeated by the weather after about 148 miles in the Pennines.
Finished the last section with a rented van.
Observations:-
1) The national cycle route (Map here)[^] is amazing.
2) England especially is completely full (traffic) - even tiny roads are really too busy to cycle.
3) Much of Wales is beautiful

I have driven Holyhead to Manchester many times and thought there was nothing of note in between.
Cycling gives it a different perspective.
(It is, however, already overrun with Englishers)
