Hello all,
How would you ensure the backupp hdd usb port wouldn't be damaged after plugging and unplugging it every week?
I'm worried about doing that operation each week and having loosen usb ports at the end...

E.g. a short Extension cable which you "never" unplug in in case it is broken you can replace it

I'm using a cheap USB-hub for the memory-sticks. An extension cord would work equally well.
This way you're moving the wear from the original slot, to the slot of the hub or the extension-cable, and those are cheap to replace. For the hd itself; it should come with its own replacable cable. No, you don't unplug that each week.
Depending on the location of the backup, you could consider a physical switch to "unplug" instead of actually unplugging.

... unless you're rotating drives on and offsite. (Or otherwise transporting them more than a few dozen feet.)

The problem with those specs is that the tests used to certify meeting them don't include the sort of events that actually damage most ports. they're done by a robot who inserts and removes the plug perfectly aligned every time. In the real world the most common form of gradually induced failure is the port being pulled loose from the PCB its soldiered to by the collective abuse of hundreds+ of inserts and removals by humans who have the plug offset or angled from perfect alignment that torque the socket with every insert. They also don't cover stress from the cord being yanked on in various ways that gradually stress the port.

Just get an usb hub which needs power to work and only switch it on when you need it. No plugging required.

Use a replaceable bit -- an extension cable or a USB hub. However, phones handle many thousands of cycles without issue, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Now, if you're talking firewire, that's a different story, but you're not, so no worries
