I battled for more than two days in a Prism application to get events in a Blend-type behavior to work. The behavior was supposed to set the headings for a DataGrid when the ItemsSource for the DataGrid was set to a specific DataTable. The DataGrid was set to autogenerate columns. I got some really weird effects, until I finally figured out I had to introduce a 100 millisecond delay after the View that held the DataGrid loaded, before I loaded the DataTable. Suddenly all weirdness was gone! All that was needed was patience for a 100 ms delay after the View loaded!
I introduced the delay using the DispatcherTimer. A lesson learnt costing me two days of my life!

Keep in mind that the View's loaded event fires before it is rendered and becomes visible. There are still UI element activity after the event fired. If the View is a window, I will prefer to use the ContentRendered event, but in Prism the View is usually a UserControl, that does not have a ContentRendered event.

So, following on from this and this , I am just back from a reccy visit to Cyprus.
I must say it was a success.......after visiting 3 schools and 3 villas, and the kids completing entry assessments at the first school we visited, we have accepted school places and signed a lease on a villa.
The next 3 months in Qatar are all about getting everything ready to pack up and ship out, looks like the mrs+kids will go back to the UK at the end of june and the shipment will head of to Cyprus, I will then head to Cyprus to meet it at the end of July, and then the w+kids will head over at the end of summer in time to start the new school year.
My head is mince.....
However, still managed to publish my next blog: Cyprus is Calling for those who want to follow along
I still have the Qatar is Calling blog on the go, and as I will continue to work in Qatar, I'll probably keep it going, but updates will be less frequent once we move.

It's a bit both...
Well, at the moment, work pay for me and the family to live in Qatar, all housing and schooling is covered 100%. However, the current company lost the contract to operate the field so we are transferring to the new company mid July. The new company do not want offshore managers living in the country, so we are being forced to go back to rotation in/out. The current company is therefore responsible to relocate us back to our original point of origin (or wherever the employee wants up to the value of cost the original p.o.o would be).
I have therefore elected to relocate to Cyprus, so the current company pay the shipment of our household goods to there. I however have to do everything else, e.g. sort out housing, schooling, cars etc. etc. as if I was back at home, and all costs are my responsibility.
I will continue to work in Qatar and the new company will pay for all rotational flights each trip.
I chose Cyprus as it has a direct flight to Qatar daily, easy for work rotation, and handy for pretty much going anywhere, and for family visiting. It has a large British community, and of course a) as a EU citizen I can reside there without fuss and b) tax reasons - continue to remain tax free.
If that makes sense!
