I started on BBS's at 300 baud with my Commodore 64... I liked it because I could read the text as it scrolled by.

My first modem could be switched between 300/300 (download/upload) and 1200/75 - if uploading stuff to a BBS, it was essential that you remembered to switch modes or it took 4 times longer, then switch back if you were browsing or downloading.
