There is a rope tied around the equator. We add one meter to that rope and lift the rope by a single point until it stretched.
Can one of us walk under the rope?

The water will allow the rope to "stretch" anyway, so I don't see the point in adding length.

Well, I can't.
The Equator is far to far away to walk to, and anyway, I live on an island - Britain - so walking there is right out of the question.
But yes, in theory loads could: The highest point on the Equator is at the elevation of 4,690 m in Ecuador (thanks Google!), so if you raised it by a meter, there will be loads of points around that where a 2m gap exists.
And of course, anyone with access to a submarine...

I'll presume that the Earth is a perfect spheroid (i.e., circle at the equator).
The rope will go around the equator for most of the way, and then will diverge at some point along the tangent of that circle, and then bend and do the reverse. Thus, the length of that tangent line is 1/2 meter longer than the circle arc that is subtended.
X = extra length up to bend
= 0.5 m
R = Earth's radius
= 6371000 m
θ = subtended angle (radians)
s = length of rope from leaving tangent to hitting the bend
h = height of rope at bend
s = R tan( θ ) = R θ + X
h = [ R / cos( θ ) ] - R = R ( 1 - [ 1 / cos( ( θ ) ]
tan( θ ) - θ = ( X / R ) ~= θ^3 / 3
θ = .0043
h = 58 m

No. The height of the rope will be far too small.
Assuming Earth to be sphere and assuming we lift the rope such that both lifted ends are of same length (1/2 m), we can basically create a right angled triangle with right angle between lifted rope (1/2 m), Earth's radius (tangents are at 90, right?) and hypotenuse from Earth's center to highest point. We can then find peak height using:
(1/2)^2 + (6371000)^2 = (6371000 + x)^2
Earth's radius = 6371000m
here we end up with, x^2 + 12742000x - 1/4 = 0.
x has to be really really small.

Think again... The lifted rope will create a triangle-like shape, but its sides are longer than 1/2 meter...
The actual answers is yes - the point will be at a height of about 90 meters...

So the side comes out to be 3.5 KM assuming answer to be 90 meter. This is confusing. I will have to think again with a different approach.

Please. I am dealing with crystal reports at work and still haven't given up. What makes you think I would for this problem.
BTW, I now know how this works. I was totally ignoring the fact that when we lift the rope, it is not just that extra 1m that is going up. Say hello to our old pal trigonometry.

Adding one meter to the rope will cause the rope to rise by 2*pi meters all around the equator. That's 6.28 meters. Enough space for most people to walk under. Pull it all from one side and everyone should be able to pass under it.
