I come by it through my maternal grandmother. She made coffee so strong the family referred to it as battery acid. I make mine strong, but unfortunately it has to be 80% decaf to keep my blood pressure down .

Luckily I don't sleep too much
I have nowt to do at the weekends really, so I am capable of doing 20+ hours Saturday and Sunday and then I normally do 2-3 hours when I get back in the evening.

About a year and a half ago I went from contractor to FT/permanent (only 35hr/week, same money!)
I handle a website for a twelve-lodge district (charitable part)
Currently, I can hardly handle a single shot of booze. So, now you know where you are headed.

When I was, albeit much younger, I was supporting the retail operations for a large bank in Hungary; that's how I first went there. It wasn't unknown or even rare to work 18hrs straight through and 100 hour weeks were common. The last thing I could say was that I didn't have time for a small sherry* once in a while**.

A lesser-level IT group member was suddenly terminated Friday afternoon. No reasonable cause was given - effectively labeled redundant. That, when tied to why he was told he'd be redundant, just doesn't hold up under even mild scrutiny. Some other events coming out of HR (Human Resources) that also may bode ill. Furthermore, all of IT (at all levels) was kept in the dark about this event until it was executed.
Hang on, kids! There's a fan, and a shovel, and someone's probably going to use it.

2017.03.07: They 'took' another one. I'm reasonably convinced that what is now called a 'reorganization' is going to include getting rid of IT, altogether. Some IT-ites figure we have about three months left.
Curiosity got the best of me: I created some SQL so I can see who's being terminated as of 2017.02.01 .

Consider that "all" isnt true, but some people are lying because they are forced to do it.
I guess that some lean managment decision was taken to bring costs down.

Actually - they've been hiring a lot of staff (not IT) - and this guy is very competent and flexible. Hence - there's something afoot and it's not going to end pretty.

HR are the bane of human existence. They plot and scheme, all the time pretending to add value whilst demoralising those around them.

Sounds like he was singled out. Maybe he got fired because he got too friendly the boss' wife, or maybe just because he was spending too much time in The Lounge...

Considering the amount of work he got done, this will have some big ripples - not in terms of programming (he's not part of that), but it's a constant day-to-day. One of those support people so the rest of us can get something done. If they were hunting for dead wood, I could have shown them plenty.
The question is even the "them" party. I doubt HR had any more to do with it than carrying out. The selection came from elsewhere. Also - the place where I work rarely, indeed, every lets an employee go - they will re-purpose them. He'd already worn a number of hats, IT only the latest. He was a competent employee and got along with people, including, so far as I knew, the upper management.
So - mayhaps he ruffled someones feathers he shouldn't have, but it's quite out of character. Analysis, particularly with all of the background I know (that you couldn't) is that he's either a sacrificial lamb to justify a followup step(s), a scapegoat, or perhaps replacing all of IT with outside vendor services. The last of these would be, if they simply go by their own corporate experience, a blunder of epic proportion.
