When it comes to deployment you end up in a world of broken links, misnamed redist files etc.
I can improve the core speed of my C#/WPF app by 3x using some C++ calls to intrinsics (mostly popcnt) but when it comes to deployment it's an absolute nightmare.

Even worse: Whenever they suddently lose interest in something and head in another direction, Mickeysoft deliberately throws any obstacle in your way theat comes in handy. That usually happens after yet another failed OS and the obstacles are there to usher you in the new direction of the week too.
This BS has been going on ever since Vista and that's one of the main reasons why I only call them Mickeysoft anymore.

yes they seem to want to bury it.... but it is relatively straightforward to use and deploy.
the only hassle I had was supporting both 32bit and 64bit. Hence when I used it (many yers ago) I went 32 bits executable only...

I am only using x86 - all worked fine in VS 2010 - now in VS 2015 it doesn't deploy at all - all the links Microsoft provide in their error messages and documentation are broken. The vcredist file you can download is misnamed and doesn't deploy anyway and I am getting public key issues.
I have these issues a lot and have decided it is time to scrap C++ - it's far too much bother at the deployment stage - I hate deployment at the best of times.

WDM hardly gets a meniton in new technology, its all WDF. Soon the raw API docs will get pulled I expect.

When the universe is estimated at 93 billion light-years across, 2.5 million light years is "nearby".

Nearby star family (galaxy in loose terms) leads to it. Andromeda galaxy is the nearest one to ours. It is not a friendly one either. Just in few billion years, it will take over our nice little Milky way.

Back at my old job we kept Pascal, VB4 and Clipper books around.
That stuff was from the 80's and early 90's.
We also had a VB6 book that we actually used from time to time

I still have all my books from when I got my degree. I have loaned out the COBOL book as a monitor stand though.

I currently have 7 programming related books doing duty as monitor/laptop stands at the moment. Web Programming with Rerl, VC++6, and a computer architecture textbook for the right monitor stand. My laptop stand stack consists of 3 old text books: C++ Algorithms, C++ Data Structures, Tanenbaum's Modern Operating Systems (2nd ed), and one classic i bought with my own money: Tufte's The Visual Display of Quantitative Data. My center monitor was something I was able to pick out as opposed to something already in the office and available; it has a proper adjustable stand.
