There are two kinds of people in the world: those who can extrapolate from incomplete data.
There are only 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't.

If you change your screen name to something non-numeric, people might not get the idea that you're yet another bloody newbie who's posting technical questions in the Lounge.
It's a bit of a knee-jerk thing, because we get people like that in here all the time.

OK, so, in the interests of not having to remember an 8-digit number, I'll divide by 10,000,000, round up, and call you Number Six[^], for short.

I thought that worked out pretty well.
If you'd been 54999999 or below, I'd have had to cheat.

It's a Windows thing.
Did you try hiding all the drives that the installer might want to target with it's installation leaving only the C:\ drive visible?
This usually works for me.

Hello all,
This weekend my mother in law asked me why suddenly YouTube stopped showing videos at full screen in her MAC.
I've never used one so I told her that the best we could do was going in front of it and trying to see what was happening.
At the end, she has Mac OS X 10.5.8 and it looks like it is so old that all the external services start malfunctioning with it's safari version.
I tried to install chrome, Firefox, opera, tor, Maxthon, and I don't remember if I tried with others, but all of them refused to install in that old OS version.
Given this is an old computer 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 8GB DDR3 RAM memory, I don't know if she should buy the update DVD or not. In the Internet I've read contradictory information about that: some say that it won't work with that computer and some say it will.
What do you recommend? should she buy the DVD? and in case that DVD should be bought... which one? I've seen a lot of them in the Apple store.
PS: she is only using that computer to navigate the internet, seeing painting YouTube videos... so it has not much sense changing the computer.
Thank you all!

Most likely the processor will not be supported, but best contact a support rep from apple.
If the machine is for net only, perhaps save the time (and money) and put some user-friendly linux on it, it should work.

Probably an Ubuntu distro would do it, but truly, I would simply prefer to keep it as simple as possible... I can try it, but first let's see what apple and guys/gals say.
Thank you!

I was under the impression that they gave updates free (no need to buy DVDs).
Maybe the hardware is too old to support anything newer? Can you get her to open the App Store and see whether anything newer is offered for update?
|
|
|
|
|
Yes, they do, but it looks like that not for that old computer.
No updates appear.
In the app store though there are plenty of updates (it looks to me that they are not clean installs but upgrades) but of course, I don't have any idea on what can run there...
Time to pay a visit to the closest apple store...
Thank you.

yes - book a 'genius' appointment and say 'fix it please'

By now this looks much more interesting than installing an Ubuntu and pray.
Who knows, if I could find a spare HDD I could try it and let's see...

A buddy dragged me into an Apple shop to troll me once, and not a single "genius" could explain what "IP" meant, let alone explain it.
But boy could they harp on "gestures"! You know, that old 90's tech that you had to use with the stylus to get a Palm Pilot to recognize letters. Snazzy.

The list is out: Most Valuable Professionals[^] and deserved in all cases (except mine, I suspect). Well done all!
Good to see new names in there: it's nice to know there are more people "stepping up to the plate" and contributing to the site.
For myself, I'd like to say "Thank you" to you all, to my director, my producer, and all the hamsters I had to sleep with to get the username...
And now the bad news: Chris has confirmed that Sean's Mankini has not been captured and destroyed, so there is a high chance he will be wearing it when he delivers your award certificates...

As long as Sean is behind bars...
If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time - a tremendous whack.
