TheGreatAndPowerfulOzYou should have upgraded from Win7. It would have maintained the registration and done a "digital activation" for Win10.
I know.
Unfortunately, my wife's computer is a bit older (bought at the dawn of Win7, but it still works nicely -- or did) and I had put a smaller SSD in it to get some more time out of it.
That smaller SSD was not large enough to download win10 and maintain the win7 installation.
Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, did not allow for this type of upgrade so I wiped the SSD and installed the "free" unactivated version of win10.
Luckily I still have the old win7 HD lying around and I believe I can get the win7 key off of it and use it to activate win10 now that I've seen how to do that ==> Lounge reply shows command-line activation[^]

That doesn't always work. The machine I was upgrading was a machine I had professionally built with Win8 installed on it. Turns out the same Win8 OS was installed on all machines they built so MS wouldn't activate my system. I had to go and buy a copy of Win10 just to get a valid activation code.

Had the same recently, was on the phone to MS support for several hours as the tried to fix it remotely. The guy couldn't do it and escalated it to next level support. While waiting for them to call back (within 24 hours they said) I did a system restore to prior to the latest updates/installs - this fixed the problem
