It's the default, so at some point in a conversation people will say "Just wait until you have kids of your own."
You reply "I don't want kids."
Then starts the disbelief "Really!? Why? Kids are the best thing in the world blah blah blah..."
You explain nicely "I just really don't like kids."
They'll try to talk you into kids "You'll change your mind! I was like that too when I was your age!" (This is often not true as they already had kids at your age)
Or, also a good one, "I don't really like kids either, but your own kids are really something else." (Why did you get kids if you didn't like them in the first place!?)
So you decide to explain it so that they'll surely understand that you don't want kids "I really don't like the little dumb ugly drooling shitting trolls. When they enter a room I leave."
You have now offended the other, but they'll still think you'll want kids someday.

I've been working remotely for over 20 years, and last week I accepted a position[^] that requires being on-site (with management discretion on a case by case basis for telecommuting  )
So why did I do this? Because:
- it looks like a great company
- the people I met were smart, articulate, and had themselves been there for many many years, indicating that they really liked working there.
- I'll be working with peers, something I rarely experience as a solo remote worker, and I am really looking forward to that. (That doesn't mean I don't love working with hardware engineers, satellite designers, boat yard managers, or people in the "entertainment" industry, but with regards to the tech itself, it's been 25 years since I've worked together with people whose career is software development.)
- I'll be working with Microsoft tech (C#, SQL Server, etc.) which is my passion. Python is fine, I actually enjoy using Python on single board computers, but I really cringe at the idea of using Python for back-end work. Granted, when I installed Django and played around around with it, I actually found Python/Django a very pleasant experience. But it's still a script language, and runtime debugging of syntax errors still sucks.
- Hopefully the management (and my peers) will be considerably saner than where I have been working.
So, it'll be a 30 to 40 minute (fortunately pleasant, from what I've seen, hardly any traffic, the benefits of living in a rural town and commuting only to the outskirts of the Albany area) commute, listening to liberal biased NPR on the drive (oops, I said this wasn't going to be a political post) or maybe just driving in the silence of my own biased thoughts, haha.

Myself? I cannot seem to even keep a daily pocket calendar through to mid-January. I'd like to - it can become a journal, I suppose.
Discipline? For some reason I can't seem to extend it beyond where it turned up on its own.

I'd only gone about 15 years as a contractor.
My current employer had me on as a contractor (my request, long story) until just short of two years ago. I miss a few things about it: no need to see how much annual leave I've accumulated, short or long days, as needed, billing for when I work. And I'm 'exempt', so there's no overtime.
What I don't miss:
- Filling out an long set of tax forms so I can give myself my own money (as a distribution)- it was easier when I could count as 'sole proprietor' but the tax laws changed.
- Paying double FICA as now I'm the employer, too. Not paying that's like a 6% raise.
- No paid holidays.
Besides being around people, which should help everyone get better ideas, you do get to see a few of the perks (FICA/2, PTO, simplified taxes).
In theory, this should be what they call 'good times'

Indeed. My current remote work is W2, which as you said, has been like a pay raise. The new work is contract-to-hire but is W2. The pay rate will actually result in a pay increase, offset by the fact that I'll be paying my own health insurance for now plus the gas / wear&tear on the car, pretty much offsets the pay raise.

Talk radio is nice; most of my day at work is spent listening to talk radio instead of music.
