This years vacation goes to Costa Brava.
I guess this is mostly a question for @Joan-Murt, but any suggestions for what to do in this area that's outside of what I'll find in the guide books will be appreciated.
We're two families with small children ranging from three to six years of age.

I think they have moved on from tourists being herded into endless Hotel Miramars and Bellvueses and Bontinentals with their international luxury modern roomettes and their Watney's Red Barrel and their swimming pools full of fat German businessmen pretending they're acrobats and forming pyramids and frightening the children and barging in to the queues and if you're not at your table spot on seven you miss your bowl of Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup, the first item on the menu of International Cuisine, and every Thursday night there's a bloody cabaret in the bar featuring some tiny emaciated dago with nine-inch hips and some big fat bloated tart with her hair brylcreemed down and a big arse presenting Flamenco for Foreigners....

And spending four days on the tarmac at Luton airport on a five-day package tour with nothing to eat but dried BEA-type sandwiches and you can’t even get a drink of Watney’s Red Barrel because you’re still in England and the bloody bar closes every time you’re thirsty and there’s nowhere to sleep and the kids are crying and vomiting and breaking the plastic ash-trays and they keep telling you it’ll only be another hour although your plane is still in Iceland and has to take some Swedes to Yugoslavia before it can load you up at 3 a.m. in the bloody morning and you sit on the tarmac till six because of “unforeseen difficulties”, i.e. the permanent strike of Air Traffic Control in Paris — and nobody can go to the lavatory until you take off at 8, and when you get to Malaga airport everybody’s swallowing “enterovioform” and queuing for the toilets and queuing for the armed customs officers, and queuing for the bloody bus that isn’t there to take you to the hotel that hasn’t yet been finished. And when you finally get to the half-built Algerian ruin called the Hotel del Sol by paying half your holiday money to a licensed bandit in a taxi you find there’s no water in the pool, there’s no water in the taps, there’s no water in the bog and there’s only a bleeding lizard in the bidet.

It is a long beach...I would advise you to go along it until you came to a place with no men. Sit there and enjoy it...

Hi Jörgen!
You can do plenty of things at Costa Brava which is a wonderful place where pines get close to the sea.
You'll need to rent a car though.
You must see:
1. Peratallada (old stone made village, nice walk).
2. Cadaqués (where Dalí lived, small and colorful seaside village). if anyone gets sick in the car take some pills with you...
3. Pals (another wonderful small stone made village).
4. Calella de palafrugell (small seaside village).
5. Besalú (medieval village with one big stone bridge.
6. Girona: you must see the old city, more if you are a Game of Thrones fan as they have been filming there. You'll eat well at "el bistrot", "Casa marieta", the Japanese restaurant in front "casa Marieta" and Boira (at the same square and a nice option too), of course, and only if you want to leave one of your lungs there you must go to "El celler de can Roca" (el celler de can roca_index_a[^]) but start with the booking just now and cross your fingers.
7. If you like diving you can visit Medes Islands which have some nice diving places.
8. you can visit el cap de creus too.
9. Olot and it's volcanoes. (and it's special potatoes).
10. Tossa de mar.
11. Figueres (With the Dalí museum a truly must see) and with the Sant Ferran Fortress (you can navigate the underground wells with small boats). I've only taken breakfast there at a small Bretonne creperie there. Nice if you like crepes.
Oh, now that I remember, I've not seen it, but they also have the Catalan Toy museum: Toy Museum of Catalonia in Figueres[^]. but trust me, you must see the Dalí museum. It's difficult to describe it. All of you will find something that will impress you... doesn't matter your age or preferences.
12. Sant Pere de Roda Monastery. If I remember it right you can eat there at a normal price.
13. Lloret de mar: be careful:
It's a very nice place to visit, a castle near the sea, wonderful walk there and nice pictures can be taken.
It offers also the Jardins de Santa Clotilde (which is a botanical park).
Some modernist buildings...
Some wonderful small beaches (cala Boadella...).
But... Lloret de mar is like the Cinderella: going with children you must leave before it's dark. Lloret is very nice, but it's targeted by all the young tourists that look for drink, disco and sex... so, at night you can see strange guys and girls getting fun.

Oh, and whatever you do, don't miss to eat "pa amb tomàquet" it's super simple, but it tastes really good.

We've rented a house outside Lloret de Mar.

Given you are staying near Lloret, there's the Water World park (Water World, waterpark Costa Brava. The best Costa Brava waterpark[^]) there which is an aquatic park. Your kids will sure enjoy it. (and probably the older ones too)
You must know that people on the parking lot will put a sticker at your car. Easy to remove the first day. You are warned.
I'm afraid I've not been a lot of times to Lloret and I can't recommend anything to eat there.
