Given you are staying near Lloret, there's the Water World park (Water World, waterpark Costa Brava. The best Costa Brava waterpark[^]) there which is an aquatic park. Your kids will sure enjoy it. (and probably the older ones too) 
You must know that people on the parking lot will put a sticker at your car. Easy to remove the first day. You are warned.
I'm afraid I've not been a lot of times to Lloret and I can't recommend anything to eat there.

We have to be in Alicante early one morning to catch a ferry to somewhere. Where, within about an hours drive, would stay that'll not be too full of bloody idiots at the end of August?

I don't know that area a lot (it's at 580Km from home).
And neither I've travelled there for work so I'm afraid I can only give you one recommendation:
Benidorm is full of oldies. But is a typical place to go on holidays.
Torrevieja is a luxury residential place by the coast.
I'm afraid I can't recommend you anything else... 
I hope you are taking the ferry to Eivissa... then don't miss Sant Antoni.
And I don't know if you've read about Lloret de mar... Eivissa is much, much, much more than that... usually you can find disco, pubs, party and nice beaches and hotels.

I can see a flip phone in my future 
My 3.5 yo Samsung Galaxy S2 is cracked and a bit insane. So I thought I would shop a bit on my cellphone provider's site. Seriously people - how many of you spend 600+ USD for a cellphone?  Even spending a cheap $240 for a semi-smartphone makes me pucker.
This is baloney. I could expense this against my corporation, but the employee and the CFO is going to have a serious conversation. Hell, that's half a new laptop!

lol, but most of it is true. The suckers are indestructible, and since I'm really not that into texting other than sending a wayward child a "where are you?" I'm just having a real hard time spending that much money. Guess I'll wander down to amazon used phone land...
I'm off contract anyway, so I can shop where I want. I think i can convince myself to spend up to $200. Even so, that flip phone for $25 has the second highest ratings. lol

I have separeted buying a phone and the plan. So I can search for the biggest deals for me. So I picked the Nexus 6 when it was new. 
Best value provides Huawei and LG. Take a look at the Nexus models from them, to see what is possible.

Now in Windows 8 it's even more frustrating since its only half broken!
Making it even more frustrating, you think it's gonna be helpful, you wait....
well if you got more than 1 potentially relevant results... it's a total mess to use.... 
I fall into their trap, I click on open in new window!
But my hopes were soon crushed... it doesn't show the location, the location bar says....

It is quite amazing you can search the world (Internet) easier than you can search your own desktop.
I use c:\>findstr /I /S "text"
(ignore case, search subs)
if searching for file with certain text.

There's a certain outgoing IP number, where if blocked via firewall, will result in you not being able to surf the net at all in later windows versions. The call is originating from the explorer process or other assoc modules.

I ended up getting so frustrated with it that I wrote my own contents search that used one thread per CPU core and one for the GUI. Was much faster than the windows search (that didn't work anyway).
