It's damn annoying - it's far too easy to either forget, or miss-key and hit it. 
I don't think I've ever used it for it's "intended purpose" (but then I don't use the "Back" button that much either).
Bad command or file name. Bad, bad command! Sit! Stay! Staaaay...

Never mind that, when are they going to work on important things that people need, like the ability to disable the back button via asp.net code. It'll practically solve world hunger.

The thing is, it's not a "Back" key, and has never been a "backspace" key (the left arrow is the backspace key).
It is, and always has been the "Destructive Backspace" key, which goes back one space, "destroying" whatever is in that space.
"Destructive Backspace" is a bit much to write on a key, though.

My backspace key could have a multiline label... 
My PrtSc and Pause buttons have Sys Rq and Break on the bottom side of the keys! But I really have no clue what that does. Modern keyboards don't have it I think, they're too flat to have any text there.

I've yet to find use for the scroll lock key.

I don't think it actually does anything (anymore).
A coworker uses the num lock key (it's on by default, he puts it off). Now that's annoying.
And caps lock should get a less prominent place. HOW OFTEN HAVE YOU TYPED CAPS INSTEAD OF TAB OR SHIFT WITHOUT NOTICING?

I never even knew that Backspace takes me back. I always click on the back button.

It works in most file explorers, too. I actually use it there, because there's nothing to destructively backspace.
I suppose on Linux, some knee-jerker has assigned rm -rf to it.

It is one of my favorite shortcut - I use it all the time. In the browser, in the win explorer to go one level up, especially in the "Save as " dialogs, in Total commander, etc...
I can't remember having ever clicked on a back button in a browser.

I build sites that correctly handle the back button, and save state going backward and forward. If I could do it, Google could.

So I'm out of town and my son calls and asks if he can install this game on my wife's PC. I said OK.
Well it turns out he was logged into her account, and installed in on the Desktop.
So she calls and says can you help, there's files all over the desktop.. I remote in and sure enough it's a mess. But I do see a Steam Uninstall. So I fired it up. Took a few seconds. Done.
Except that it completely wiped EVERYTHING off the desktop.. AND HOSED HERE PC ACCOUNT. She cannot run anything. Can't even open files.
Some files can be accessed under My Docs, but for the most part her account is useless.
Wifey's not happy.

Ha! My kid has installed so much Steam crap on my wife's laptop that the drive is filled and she can't even log into Facebook. Well, OK, there's a silver lining there, but really?!
