So I'm out of town and my son calls and asks if he can install this game on my wife's PC. I said OK.
Well it turns out he was logged into her account, and installed in on the Desktop.
So she calls and says can you help, there's files all over the desktop.. I remote in and sure enough it's a mess. But I do see a Steam Uninstall. So I fired it up. Took a few seconds. Done.
Except that it completely wiped EVERYTHING off the desktop.. AND HOSED HERE PC ACCOUNT. She cannot run anything. Can't even open files.
Some files can be accessed under My Docs, but for the most part her account is useless.
Wifey's not happy.

Ha! My kid has installed so much Steam crap on my wife's laptop that the drive is filled and she can't even log into Facebook. Well, OK, there's a silver lining there, but really?!

I had a similar thing many years ago (Win 3.11 long ago), with the Select SSADM diagram tool.
I wanted to just try it out, so I created a new project (I remember it being hideously unintuitive, using all the wrong words for the options -- I can't remember what you had to select for "Create Project", but it wasn't anything like those two words).
Anyway, it defaulted to creating the project in the root dir of C:, which wasn't so unusual, in those days, so I just let it carry on.
After playing with it for a while, I found the option to delete the project, and everything was bon.
... Until the next time I tried to boot the machine, which, wonder of wonders, wouldn't start, because there were no files at all in the root dir.
I had to boot to DOS from a floppy, and copy the COM files back into the root.
It was that day that I started keeping back-ups of autoexec.bat, config.sys, and win.sys files. It took me forever to remember everything that I'd added to them.
Most big installers these days run System Restore before starting the install, so you should be able to get back to normal easily enough.

It's pretty normal. Most uninstallers simply remove the installation dir, because people get pissed of with "We couldn't remove everything; you'll have to do it manually" messages.
What most installers don't do, though, is install directly into the dir that you assign. They create a subdir inside it -- so it was the guy who wrote the install script who wants his donkey kicked; the uninstall script was probably generated by a routine written by someone not so stoopid.

Hmmm... it's not so easy to change the destination folder in steam - it's in the local settings... it doesn't change as accident. and the default is *not* the desktop.
steam is very safe for kids and people with minor technical knowledge (most don't change the defaults at all)... so normally it would just install in x86\steam\steamapps\...<some sub="" folder="">
So you, your kid, or your wife must have set the "default installation folder" manually to the desktop folder... never heard about anyhting like that before --- who has configured the steam installation? (i mean not the game - i mean steam itself)

I am fixing a problem low down in one of the base classes. I have applied a fix and an 'allow old stuff to still work' cludge. I am slowly removing all the old code and replacing it with the working solution; it's used in around a hundred places. Then I will remove the cludge and accept the failures. It appears to be okay so far but I fear I am about to hit the problem blocks real soon.
The code is in Matlab. 
I do not know Matlab.

Da boss is right good at it and we have a couple of contractors doing most of the dirty work. I want to keep away from it as much as possible, I'm really working on infrastructure and deployment rather than development.
However, I found a wee foul up that would cause me headaches and by the time I'd found what was wrong it became apparent that I am going to be fixing it.
Fun. Maybe I should check for any Matlab questions that haven't be marked as 'Not a real language' by Bel Shamharoth.
p.s. Matlab isn't all that bad or at least the way this is written isn't too bad.

I had to de-fark the work of a numbnuts who had decided that it was the bee's knees and that everyone should use it for everything, a few years ago. Someone later replaced the convoluted, unmaintainable cr@p that the numbnuts had written with a database -- and only a database! No code, and only standard SQL queries!
That day's work lasted an incredibly unpleasant two weeks. Seriously. I was breaking my balls for two weeks on a disgustingly simple problem.
So if you don't turn up in the lounge, for a while, I'll know why -- and offer you my condolences in advance.
