Actually, I tend to look at things coming from the other direction - software has been devalued nowadays to the point where nobody is willing to pay more than a few bucks for it. I blame Steve Jobs for convincing the masses that software should sell for no more than $1.99 (and then you have to give him his 30% cut). When's the last time you bought software from a shelf in a box, or direct from a developer/publisher?
That's why, IMO, today's software is cheap (and along with it went the quality)--the real revenue source is the adware embedded in so-called apps. I have a number of applications and utilities of my own that might've made some money a few years ago, but nowadays people would expect to get for free. Or certainly not at a price that would make it worth my while.

Not so much when last but when ever? Apart from games and new Windows versions I honestly can't recall ever paying for software. Pre realistic Internet speeds, back in the dark days of the early 90s, there was always plenty of stuff given away by magazines. And when t'Interweb got going there were freeware sites by the thousand. Anything you couldn't get for nowt you simply programmed yourself. Then came open source. I don't think you can blame Jobs for all that.

There are still other freeware product but only previous windows versions.

So what ? Either you need the SW for a one shot, then the trial solution should be good for you, or not, and then it is legitimate to pay for it, IMO.

I don't mind that. Some music that incorporates growls or screaming can be very relaxing for me. But if I'm bored, I get nervous.

It is a very different thing becoming deaf after a lifetime of hearing, writing, and performing music from being profoundly deaf from birth. He has never heard a note of music, not even a drum beat in his entire life. He can rely on his own internal timing for the mechanics of a dance but there is a great deal more to it at this level than simple repetition of steps. For emotional and dynamic interpretation he has no cues. He cannot, as Beethoven did, hear the music in his head or imagine what it is like because he has zero experience of volume changes, timbre, syncopation or any of the thousands of elements that we all take for granted when hearing music. He literally does not know what music is.

Can anyone explain why, as soon as Apple Update installs an update, it immediately phones home to see if there are available updates?
Is it because updates may cause other updates to be needed? Is it because Apple is so keen on updates that they want to be 100% sure you're up to date? Is it because there was an edge case 10 years ago that could only be fixed by doing a follow up check?
It's always bugged me.
