Actually, I tend to look at things coming from the other direction - software has been devalued nowadays to the point where nobody is willing to pay more than a few bucks for it. I blame Steve Jobs for convincing the masses that software should sell for no more than $1.99 (and then you have to give him his 30% cut). When's the last time you bought software from a shelf in a box, or direct from a developer/publisher?

That's why, IMO, today's software is cheap (and along with it went the quality)--the real revenue source is the adware embedded in so-called apps. I have a number of applications and utilities of my own that might've made some money a few years ago, but nowadays people would expect to get for free. Or certainly not at a price that would make it worth my while.
