Yeah man. So far, out of all the tech people (coworkers) I've talked to, they keep on trying to scare me or some crap telling me things like LA people suck. But in my experience, the folks I've talked to on the phone from there have been awesome to chat with. So, I just want a better idea of the people.
And, I'd like like to know the best spots to live reasonablity if I want to have access to Hollywood so I can go to a couple acting classes twice a week. The one in particular I'd go to at first is in North Hollywood I believe.
And of course I want a tech job for the daytime hours. So, any ideas of recruiters or companies hiring would be super.

Well...there's a network of faults underneath the city. Eventually, LA will suffer a BSOD.

I grew up in the area around LA. Nothing could induce me to go back other than to cash in a huge lottery ticket and leave immediately. Los Angeles - Southern CA generally - is a cesspool. The northern part - far from the Left Coast - might be tolerable for a while, but it's still a Peoples' Republic.

As you say the only good thing about LA is getting out of it!

No, the speed with which you get out of there is important too!

What do you mean by cesspool though? All money aside, what didn't you like about it? Just curious because I'm a couple weeks away from packing up and moving.

Jeremy, all of Southern California is a sewer - overpriced, overcrowded, overtaxed, polluted air and water, when you can get water... And, to boot, it's filled with Liberals who believe the US Constitution is optional, and citizens' rights are what the local government or homeowners' association decide they are for the moment. There is nothing whatsoever about LA or it's surrounding environs that is worth tolerating at any wage. Wherever you are, it's better than LA.

I've been told that, but I have my reasons to go. It's not to live out until I'm dead, it's because I'm on a mission. So, I'm going regardless. But, despite all that, it can't be as bad some people expect me to believe. I'm sure NYC has its issues too.

That's certainly true, and they're many of the same issues. Be prepared to deal with them, keep your head, and you'll survive it for the time you're there, I'm sure. Happy Trails!

Do you really mean just Los Angeles and very near surrounding?
Or more of Southern California in general?
I'm in north Orange County, about an hour from downtown LA.
(Distances in Southern California are measured in travel time, since, depending on the end points, the same mileage can take quite different amounts of time!!)
There are plenty of tech companies in Southern California.
They tend to be clustered near universities (no surprise there):
Pasadena -- Caltech (my alma mater)
* JPL (I worked there, too!)
Irvine -- U.C.Irvine
* Google has a development center in Irvine
* Neudesic is another company in Irvine I know of with SW developers
* Microsoft has an office but I don't know if sales/support only.
Westwood -- U.C.L.A.
Downtown -- U.S.C. (but that's not a great area, so their related-businesses are further away)
San Diego -- U.C.S.D.
* WebSense
But not exclusively near universities:
Brea (~20 minutes from Disneyland)
* Sciex Separations (I'm here)
* Beckman Coulter
(These are not Software businesses but have significant software development efforts.)
Those are the ones I can think of without any research. I'm sure that there are many more!

Well, I mean in particular as close to Hollywood as possible. I've done the acting thing for a while, and I want to take it seriously. It's something I do on the side though, so I'm going to want a tech job for the daylight hours. So anywhere around the LA area that could get me to one of my acting classes in Hollywood a couple times a week would be awesome.

All nice areas but mostly too far from Hollywood to make it viable (other than Pasadenaa which is nice but a long way from the beach (important to me!) Westwood is very nice but probably a bit pricey.

I'd still rather be closer to Hollywood since my acting classes[^] are there. I've already studied with Brad online, and I like him. So, I want to study with him in person.

Just say it's too far for me! I live 20 minutes from the beach in a nice area with lots of amenities and stuff to do.
However, as I said, what's right for me might be suburban-hell for you!

Oh, I like the beach a lot man. I live in Destin right now and I can walk to the beach from my house. But, I'm also on a mission, which has to take priority ya know. Just sent you that email btw.

Nice place to visit... well maybe not.
My wife is from L.A. and we lived in SoCal, including L.A. for twelve years.
It's too expensive and all the politicians are extremists.
On the other hand, I'll be there for Christmas again this year.

Certainly there has to be a lot of good qualities about it though or else people wouldn't live there. I want to know what those are. The past few days I've been talking to a bunch of negative people it would seem, and I don't really believe LA is as bad as they expect me to believe.
Btw, if you know of some good spots to live that are close to Hollywood and reasonably priced, let a brotha know.

Ha! My brother tried to live there too, but quickly scurried back to New England!
If I could afford it, I'd move back to San Diego, but not L.A.
My wife says Glendale might work. When I lived there, we were in Woodland Hills which is pretty far out in the San Fernando Valley.
