yeah, me too. I'm kinda rooting for Android. It's got a looooong ways to go to be a real desktop os, but I like the quality I'm seeing. If all the dang desktop linuxes could converge to ONE desktop linux, they might have a chance. But they kinda don't seem to be. (I don't even know. Haven't been keepin tabs on desktop linuxes.)

We must not be reading the same articles, because all I keep reading about is how badly vulnerable Android is, and there's no clean solution because its users are at the mercy of their carriers.
Also, desktop OS? I've seen the x86 Android emulators, but I'm guessing you're talking about something else entirely...?

You're not seeing quality in the Android code base? I am. And in their docs. Quality.
As for the updates, my Nexus10 is receiving patch updates.
I'm not talking major OS or service pack updates, either - patch updates WITH release notes that specifically say it is a security update only. Yeah, microsoft, i see no release notes from you. My at&t phone may not ever see those updates thanks to, well, at&t. But google is putting them out. And they wouldn't be doing that if they weren't planning on fixing the situation they're in now.
I'm definitely not talking about x86 android emulators - those are TERRIBLE. You're way better off testing on a real device.
I'm hoping to see the quality of the android code base expand to handle a real tablet PC that you can hook 2 monitors and 2 usb hubs to. Which, of course, is a loooong ways from reality. But I'd like to see it. I'd dump windows immediately, because so would the grammas who can't afford apple.

The irony of your statement is that the Surface Pro is already there, and has been there for a number of years now. I've used mine as my primary computer, hooked up to a USB hub that let me connect 3 monitors to it, plus my mouse, keyboard, and all other standard USB devices.
The only reason I'm no longer using it in that fashion is that I've seen upgrade to 4K, which my first-gen Surface Pro can't do.
How much longer are you willing to wait for this to be reality with Android?

Well, yeah, I've got a 2-in-1 laptop, too (a lot cheaper).
It's got my 60" tv and a portrait monitor and 2 USB hubs with 4 midi devices, 2 wireless keyboards n a mouse, midi adapter, and external drive on it. It screams and I'm not goin back to desktops.
But I wouuuuuuld like to have an alternative OS that'll do that that can make microsoft jump again. An OS popular enough that grandmas will use it. I can wait another 10 years for Android to get there. But when it does, I'll look forward to closing my windows.
I mean, why are we ok with win8 coming out. LAME. win8 SP1 comes out. LAME. win10 comes out. LAME. Now we're on SP1 which is SUPPOSED to be non lame BY DEFINITION...

I will give them some kudos for VS, Windows 10 (upgraded easily and simply) but they lose a LOT for their "telemetry" crap they distributing.

Eh... I give much simpler instructions.
"See that thingy that's asking you to upgrade to Windows 10? Click the button. Follow the instructions, then go watch TV for a couple hours. When you get back, it'll probably be ready for you to follow a few more instructions, and you're done."
Honestly, as operating system upgrades go, this is about the smoothest one I've ever seen. Had a couple minor annoyances right after the install, but 95% of things just worked exactly as before. It starts up faster, it never BSODs (I was getting those 2-3 times a week before I upgraded - Probably a corrupted driver somewhere), and it does all of that tedious upgrading while I'm at the office, instead of whining at me to reboot when I'm in the middle of a game.
It's not perfect, but it's an improvement... And it was free.

sorry customer. sucks to be you. 10SP1 isn't as broken as win10, it's install didn't blow up for me, and it was free.

If "loads" of people were using my software, well, that'd be nice, and I'd want them to be on a nice modern OS so things would be less likely to break.
So yeah, no rage here. Win10 hasn't annoyed me yet, and that's a pretty big accomplishment in and of itself.

Any new OS release is bound to have some issues with it, but all in all it works perfectly for me.
The one thing I am pissed about is the auto update mechanism which you can't switch off.

I fought the upgrade for awhile but after I finally went to it's fine. There's a couple of little bugs here and there but they'll get to those in an update; nothing show-stopping. I'm actually impressed at how well it works with my complex set of development tools and utilities on here, I expected something to break. Nothing worth mentioning is wrong at this point.

Hehe. I'm just going to sit here in my corner of the desktop usage share, and watch the newest Microsoft drama roll by with my pet penguin.
On a slightly more serious note, I did use the insider preview of 10 (now I have to work on my brother's machine, which got upgraded). It's junk the way I see it - especially if you're not using a standard setup. It feels more like they reskinned Windows 7 than did anything innovative.
Microsoft should stop trying so hard to be hip, and go back to the solid production machines they had a reputation for.
When I talk to people who don't even know what source code is, I open an editor window and say "This is what we go through every time you find a bug!"

I too share your pain.
Recently I bought a Chromebook.It is refreshing to experience once again how a computer is supposed to work.
Seniors, in particular, should be spared the suffering of using an OS requiring such relentless doses of updates as Windows does. If all they need to do is browse the internet, why should they be bothered with useless eye-candy desktop widgets?
Simplicity is a requirement for efficiency.

Microsoft's brand is being tarnished. And Microsoft is the one doing the tarnishing.
If they'd not released 8-10 to the public, and just went from 7 to 10 SP1, well, that probably would have been smart. I, being a computer programmer, felt I should suffer through it. If my users were gonna, I should. I didn't suffer cuz I'm a dang computer programmer. But why so much needless suffering for the grandmas out there. People have bought new computers to find out they can't even use them.

I like Windows 10 just fine. However, it has the same just slightly flakey feel as a Linux distro. Stuff doesn't always work just right. I think Microsoft may be telling us there is no longer any difference between Windows and Linux. I think they'll eventually be sorry they did that.

I haven't been assimilated into win10 yet. I feel your pain. Even with win8.1, I curse the guy that came up with metro tiles. It may look fine on a 10" screen, but I mean when you have a single 55" 4k for monitor, it looks horrible.
