No facts to back this up, but it seems the cars are made cheaply (bad ignition switches, bad emissions) so they can sell you a new car in a few years.

Yep, some sort of planned obsolescence.
Not just force us (well, not me, as I don't have a car), to buy a new car, but for all the support line to buy new diagnostic tools for each car manufacturers and car models.
