Have any of you used the "send a smile" or "send a frown" feedback widget? I've used the "send a frown" several times when something's obviously broken. I've never received any kind of acknowledgement. Have any of you?
This is shaping up just like Microsoft Connect. Every time I submitted an issue it was either marked "As designed" or silently deleted.

I have never received any acknowledgement from Microsoft over the years, for anything. 
Edit: I gave up sending feedback to them, years ago. I love them and I hate them.

Really? I think you give them too much credit. If not Microsoft, it would have been some other tech company supplying development tools. Surely Microsoft's operating systems and development tools are just that... tools.

They changed the computer industry and have always been the best (in my time at least) with the tools and products. No one is better. That doesn't deserve a pedestal but I find it odd how people love to hate on Microsoft, and often over very little things too. Many of our careers exist because Microsoft products are not perfect or complete. We make them better.

Ummmm... actually Apple does provide free development tools for their operating systems (OS X and iOS). There are several open source development tools, compilers, debuggers, frameworks, etc... for Linux. There have even been other DOS/Windows development tools such as Borland.
Plus (and more to my point) Microsoft just happened to be in the right place at the right time and made some shrewd business decisions (along with some unethical ones) to create the desktop monopoly they enjoy today. Could easily have been Xerox, IBM, Apple, Borland, Digital Research, DEC, Novell, TI, or a host of others.

I certainly don't hate Microsoft. They've created some good products over the years. They've also created some real turds. I just don't believe that they are particularly great - especially these days.

Of course, but none come close to the tools that Microsoft have.

Yet 20 years later and they still have not done better than Microsoft. So, no, I don't think it could have easily been others. Microsoft had the vision to make their products developable for developers. Apple said no way, and look where that got them.

Ahhh... GEM! Hence my mention of Digital Research. Pretty advanced for it's day. Our friends at Microsoft and Apple both "borrowed" a bit from Digital Research. Hell, Microsoft practically "borrowed" all of DOS (ie. CP/M) from Digital Research. Just another reason for my statements about how it could easily have been some other tech firm rather than Microsoft...

Yep, one important example of the folly of being the "first to market" (or early anyway) -- the smart move is to hang back and see what the competition does and how it's received by the public, then sweep in with a simpler/cheaper product. Let the competition do the market research for you.

You have to wonder why they ever bothered with beta testers - I was one for a couple of DOS versions back in the day. It didn't matter what you reported, they always just ignored you.
That attitude clearly hasn't changed...

I actually got to talk to someone at Microsoft when I had trouble with disc 11 of 13 while installing Windows 95. No one there has acknowledged any communication, nor deigned to respond in any way to any feedback or request for assistance since. Microsoft doesn't do customer service.
Will Rogers never met me.

I never ever used the feedback smiley, I even went so far and removed it from the title bar via an extension because it's annoying to have it sitting there (but not because I'm grumpy all the time and hate the smile  ). Providing a feedback command in the Help menu would be sufficient, and given the fact that they don't seem to care so much about feedback in reality, it doesn't really deserve such a prominent place (but it's a good alibi).
I used Connect only once so far, complaining about the fact that I constantly have to renew my MSA log-in credentials because the token expires after 12 hours or so and VS 2015 can't handle two-factor authentication anymore. This wasn't an issue in VS 2013. It was closed down (of course), on the grounds that they changed how log-in works (so it's by design).
