I can't tell you how confused I am about this - I only got it from the hint, can you imagine someone getting the CCC on the hint alone with out understanding the clue they would just post random words the next day

The rules are simple:
1. Pick a word
2. Replace every letter with a sign, where the same letter must be replace with the same sign
3. Add a hint
There is no logical/mathematical relation between the signs and the letters...

With the Hint, it seems it was kinda "obvious"
The game is basically about choosing a word and obfuscating it:
E.g.
Stuff -> Could be 57_}} or $7v|| or whatever you like, yesterday we had an equation[^] you could even do that or something else cryptic.
It's up to you. The hints are given to describe what the word could be, it is about guessing, so there is no restriction on how it must be clear that the word reflects in the obfuscation.
Another example : face = (8-) is more the "symbolic" way to go, with the hint "everyone has one".
