Sadly it seems that site's been overwhelmed by traffic. I've tried to load it a few times but it keeps timing out.

TL:DR Summary: Don't go to the African continent or the Middle East.
To bad, it has many beautiful sights.
I think more people should go see sharks. And swim with them. And get eaten. Now that's a fun holiday story!

This article is actually about a very specific danger - armed violence against middle class (and higher) mostly caucasians.
In absolute terms anywhere with roads and low traffic enforcement is far more dangerous - in fact even in the countries mentioned driving at night is probably the most dangerous thing you can do.
If you are poor then anywhere that has a history of debt peonage or unregulated manual labour is very dangerous - garment factories in Bangladesh, construction in the middle east and sulfur mines in south America for example.
If you do not have access to antibiotics and hospitals then anywhere with human or animal excrement is dangerous. Pig or duck farms in China are going to be way up that list.
If you are middle class (or higher) and caucasian then the biggest health risks are probably diabetes and coronary heart disease. The highest risk areas for these are denoted by a large yellow M.

We did the African thing last year, SA and Zambia, never felt threatened the entire time. Poverty is of no interest to us so there were no "shanty town tours" and we followed the advice of the locals on where and when to go. Fantastic trip!

Yeah - I'd put Ethiopia as one of the safest places I have been to in my life.
(Certainly much safer than any UK large town/city on a weekend after 9pm)
