Actually it was the Clinton administration in late 90's that scaled back mortgage requirements that allowed the sub-prime mortgage fiasco to precipitate and be the catalyst of the whole fiasco. But more than the politicians it was greedy Wall Street types to blame. They created and peddled the financial instruments based on the sub-prime mortgages they didn't understand. Their house of cards crashed (but hey, they got their bonuses). And still, no administration, particularly the current one that has dealt with the aftermath, has done anything to prevent this from happening again.

Well, I remember that Google denied for a long time that their ranking could be influenced from the outside (by money or anything else). It was only the "procedures" assessing the quality of the target site that decided the ranking.
So if Google now makes its money (mostly) by paid ranking, just add a big banner along the lines of "Our search result rankings are influenced by how much the target sites pay us." and be done with it. Then every user (in the EU or elsewhere) can decide for him/herself if this is acceptable to him/her and switch to another search engine if not.
The good thing about pessimism is, that you are always either right or pleasently surprised.

The rule(s) should be applied across the board, not just to the wealthiest (or easiest to punish).

They wouldn't dare take on Baidu or Yandex though because they're looking for:
a) No repercussions, and
b) High net worth
Nothing at all to do with consumers or fair trade, just about getting hands on easy cash.

Why is it inane? It seems quite reasonable for me. Your original argument was that because Baidu and Yandex aren't popular, somehow the laws applied to Google shouldn't be applied to them.
Isn't that the same as saying that the regulations applied to Ford shouldn't be applied to, say, Rolls Royce?
