Okay, I admit I haven't been terribly productive in the software department for the past twenty years; other things keep popping up to distract me. Like having a job which pays a real salary and offers benefits. That's scarce around here, and there's no one paying for software. Recently, though, I've experienced a real compulsion to get back into hardware development. No, not silicon stuff - everything I know about that is obsolete - but real hardware. To that end, I ordered this[^] a couple of days ago, and expect delivery on Thursday. I've wanted one for 40+ years, but never allowed myself to buy one. Lately, though, I see old friends dropping dead weekly and I have to wonder, "what am I waiting for?" I think it really doesn't matter all that much if it makes economic sense for me to buy this, it doesn't matter if I ever make a product to sell with it. What matters is that I can finally afford it, and I want it. Isn't that the real reason I worked so hard for so many years to learn what I know today, and get paid for sharing with my employer? What other justification do I need? Why do I feel slightly guilty for indulging myself?

This hardware gives one the ability to whittle steel into whatever shape one needs. A mill is one of the fundamental machine tools required to fabricate nearly anything from metal or any other rigid material. The other basic machines include a lathe, for turning metal extrusions into radially symmetric shapes and making threads, and the brake, for making bends in metal sheets. Various other tools add refinements, and make many tasks much simpler, but these three encompass the foundations of a machine shop. I have lost count over the past 40+ years of the inventions I envisioned, but was unable to prototype, only to watch others profit from making what I invented long before.
One day soon I would like to retire, but I don't want to stop working; I just want to stop having to show up for work every day. I think when I'm done doing electrical engineering, I'd like to try gunsmithing. This tool is an excellent investment toward that end.

Oh, good luck for that sir.
Many times this happens, you get to see your idea being formulated into a reality and people making their fortune from what you were expecting to get your chance in life, just because of financial support as well as time budget. Mostly, people lack in either time or financial budgets... Some get a vault full of them.
May you get a chance to accomplish what you start next time and may it profit you.

Interesting. My day job is writing software that computes tool paths for milling machines. Only the milling machines I'm talking of are slightly bigger. I am a realist. I have been constrained to "founder" by CP, where i would simply prefer "owner", and I really only own the name, i.e. it is a registered company name I trade under, not an empire.

It depends on the website. If you run a scam website such as the online gambling ones then you'll make more money than if you blog about the bowel movements of your cat. The latter is going to appeal only to a very niche market.
