I would say that our govt is not at all disconnected and it is controlled directly by the people.
At least I hope it is.

So we're left either believing that people don't know how to vote in a candidate that represents their views OR we can conclude that the pack of lying scumbags in the media/government/etc. refuse to show their true colors UNTIL they've attained power. The media (on both sides) are in on the scam because they've found it easy to make each other rich and powerful while raping everyone else.
In short, it is impossible to have real democracy with all the lies because the lies effectively cancel the vote. To make a choice you have to have a choice and it isn't offered at this point.
If you doubt that, try to get a candidate into office that will cut spending.
You can vote one in that says he'll cut spending but once in power he'll do the opposite.
If you try to recall him you'll be painted a nutter/racist/terrorist and get a tax audit shoved up your ass.

I used to own an Olivetti Laptop. It was fantastically powerful (for it's time). Twin 3.5" floppy drives, CGA (green) screen, a whopping 512k of memory, DOS 5.0 and a great keyboard, no mouse, no track-pad, no network. I can't remember the model number but it used to run for nearly four hours on one battery charge and it used to take 3 1/2 hours to do a complete rebuild of a system I was working on. The compiler, linker and source code were on one floppy drive, the libraries, etc. on the other. I recently managed to actually get the old source code to compile on my current system (Win7, SSD, Quad-core beast) - it took 4 seconds!
