Losing limbs no barrier for juggling mountaineer
[^]

"“It sounds strange, but if you offered me my hands and feet back now, I’d say no for sure,” he says. "

Hmmm, i dont think so.

--edit--

He lost them on Mt Blanc so the story says, got hammered by a 5 day storm, killed one of them, and he lost all four limbs.

Reminds me of when I climbed it many years back. I really hadnt appreciated the scale, and inherent danger of it and so was totally unprepared. My clothing was what you would wear to the pub in winter, the other two I climbed it with were no better equiped. We did have ice axes, crampons and rope though, that much we had thought of. But we only had two pairs of gloves between us. SO I gave my right glove to my friend, whose left arm is paralyzed, and thus is kept in his pocket all the time, while I had the left glove, and likewise kept my right hand in my pocket.

By Christ it was cold though. The denim jacket and jersey I had on was no protection at all. SO cold the cameras siezed up, they were the metal shutter variety in those days. Utterly staggeringly cold. minus 30C or some such, we set out at 3 am to make it to the sumit for sun rise, the colddest part of the day.

And then there were the massive crevasses. We didnt have much in the way of torches either, and certainy not ones that lasted more than a few hours, so you couldnt see them till you were almost on them. Sometimes you would be on a snow bridge without even knowing it till you glanced left and right and saw the massive black holes that said you were on a bridge. That made you step lightly!

We were roped together though, not that I am sure we would have known what to do if one of us fell in.

Fortunately it didnt happen, and we made it up and down safely, but what risks we took! I think that year about 30 people died climbing it.

So thats my memories of Mt BLanc, its not to be taken lightly, as this guy knows all too well.
