When I bought my machine it was set up to boot to desktop. I use 2 monitors.
On the primary monitor the windows logo sends me to the start menu.
On the second monitor the logo sends me to the start screen.
Try left clicking in the lower left corner (mouse pointer off the screen) and see if that brings up the start button menu.
BTW right click in that corner (also windows key + x) and see the administrative menu. It is very nice.

This triggers the start screen, so no added value compared to hitting the windows key. This is also the single visible change between 8.0 and 8.1.

Don't know what to say about the start menu except even though I have access to it in Windows 8.1 I never use it because I had learned to do without it in Windows 8.

Yes Scot's tutorials are very good. I think if more people watched them they wouldn't find Windows 8.1 so intimidating.
