Guys,
Have any of you used MariaDB in projects? It was apparently started as an off-shoot from MySQL and I think it was created by the same person/team that originally created MySQL before Oracle took it over and started to charge for it. It supports much of MySQL and it comes with an IDE called HeidiSQL.
I've only used it for quick fly-by tests and it looks to be very stable and quite comprehensive. It would be interesting to hear if anyone has moved from MySQL to MariaDB or if somebody who has a passion for databases could maybe comment about it.

When Oracle bought MySQL it worried me, but I was pretty happy to hear about the offshoot project. I'd also love to hear others' comments.

HeidiSQL is great, and is a stable addition to my toolbox.
One thing it lacks is sqlite support (hopefully the author will get round to implementing it as the library he used has support for it now).

Mehdi,
Thanks for confirming what I suspected was the case with Heidi. There's a lot going on inside it but sometimes a lot can be less but I think Heidi is equipped with what you need. I have a use in mind for it at work. We're currently using SQL Server 2008 in our commercial app which is fine with me but there are some hardware device test playbacks I'm working on and I see a perfect fit for MariaDB and Heidi.

Hi
We are using MySQL in our main application (MFC7)(Accounting software).
I 'vew seen the MariaDB web site and I was happy because of that.
If anytime Oracle stop the support of MySQL we can switch to MariaDB.
We have implemented some C++ class that it's methods are like CRecordset but much faster and no ODBC, with a lot of more features, full backup and restore, BLOB support and more...
We must test this MariaDB.
If anyone works on MySQL and MFC we will be glad to connect and help each other.
Regards
Hadi

I have been using MariaDB for the past year or so on personal web projects (LAMP, mind you), and so far it delivers just as it says: drop in replacement for mysql. In actual fact, I've uploaded from my test machine to my site (hosted on CentOS5, with MySQL, not MariaDB) and it all works flawlessly (so far).
To be honest, I haven't tried the new storage engine, or any of the MariaDB-specific features, and the projects I'm working on require largely plain vanilla SQL queries, so my experience may not be really the norm.
Also, I cannot comment on HeidiSQL, I prefer phpMyAdmin to interact with MySQL/MariaDB.

I have been using HeidiSQL for about a year or so now. I found it gave more control over table management and queries than the default MySQL workbench application. And its free to try

Last night I downloaded Visio 2013 Preview using the highly dubious MS File Transfer Manager* and when I checked this morning, the download had completed, but was marked as suspended, because FTM cannot rename the temporary file. It was downloading to C:, so maybe it's permissions problem, although I am running as admin. I was advised to manually rename the temp file, but couldn't locate it via a quick Windows Explorer search. I was also advised to start FTM As Admin, but I couldn't find where to start it. When I started IE as admin, and tried to resume to the download, stupid FTM summarily decided to restart the download. My patience will not survive a second such debacle, so when my second download is down, and if this happens again, I will elephanting sh*t myself.
Why must they insist on their download manager, and if they must, why not stick with Akamai?

No, they don't insist on that download manager (they used to). But now you can download using any browser, and resuming an interrupted download is supported as well.

Akamai sucks too. It doesn't work through an authenticating proxy. Drove me nuts for a day and half trying to figure out why my download would not even start because the error messages Akamai's manager would show were so generic as to be completely useless.
I originally thought that MS's servers were refusing the connection because I was trying to download stuff on the day, and the next, of the Windows 8 and VS2012 release. I finally cranked up Fiddler and watched the Akamai traffic. Low and behold, HTTP error "407 - Authentication required". Now WHY ON THIS EARTH couldn't Akamai's manager just tell me THAT instead of giving a uselessly generic "Server refused connection"?! Who writes this crap?!

Oops. Forgot to tell you.
Figured I'd wait until August to find a car on a lot that the dealer wanted to get rid of to make room for the 2013s.
I wanted an RS Camaro Convertible, 6 cylinder, cloth interior. In black or dark dark blue or dark dark gray.
None of the dealers had one.
So I looked on ebay.
An exotic car place in Dallas had one, almost new. Someone bought it in Memphis, drove it to Dallas, and traded it in on a Mini Cooper. 1500 miles. That knocked off about $7K from MSRP. Silly thing ended up costing less than my Sebring Limited 10 years ago.

Nice.
Something satisfying about getting a new car. My new one is due in about 3 weeks, been a looooong wait (since April).

Gonna make any changes to it?

The only ones I can think of are too expensive/complicated. (Doesn't have the HUD. Doesn't have the USB port in the sound system.)
A cold air intake is probably the only "real" upgrade I'd do in the near future.
Maybe some prettifying things, but I think it's kind of pretty as-is.
Now, when I get the '79...that'll be a different story. All sorts of things I'd do to that. (Although I probably won't drop in the BMW seats like I did to my last one...)

Great looking car.
But...but... there's something wrong with having a V6 in a muscle car. V6 twin turbo - in a pinch - but surely the law states that such a car must come pre-installed with a V8 with a wicked set of headers?

Not at these gas prices...too much mandated crap on the engines.
So...it's not a muscle car. I just got it to pick up pretty hitchhikers and hang out in the parking lot of Home Depot on Friday nights.
But the near-future '79 will be fully kitted out. There's enough room under the hood to actually do things.

Love these new camaros. I would get one very similar, just with leather. It would be a waste of time where I live though as there are only a handful of days in the summer that I could drive it top down.
I wasn't, now I am, then I won't be anymore.
