Recently I decided to switch a job. My ex-employer asked me if I was willing to pick up a project on my spare time. I'd similar issue as yours about the compensation. After studying all my options I decided to go with hourly.

The main reason was
1. Royalty was full of risk, but the reward is potentially huge (in some cases)
2. Lump sum can be a screw up to either one or both parties; there are so many what if's
3. Hourly give me a peace of mind as I will get paid for the hours I worked with no risks of requirement or scope change. At the same time I added a clause to the contract to quit at any time. That way if the employer wants they can give it to someone to finish the work. Since this was an extra income for me I don't want to bring too much stress to my life, so decided to take the least risky option. Of course that means potentially less rewarding that the other two options.
