As developers a part from development it is good to look at physical health by exercising always. It keeps the body and back not ache.when i began playing football 1 month ago, i was running all over the pitch chasing the ball. everyone was shouting "stop following the ball". I stopped and learn. Then went to play defense. Still complaints "Look for the ball don't just stand waiting" then "chase the striker", I learn, more complaints "stop shooting with your toe" "Control the ball" " Don't fear the ball", I learn, I learn and learn then realized Ronaldo must have been corrected 1 million times. Okay good break back to hitting the keyboard.
I only read newbie introductory dummy books.

I need a strategy for my photos. Some say CD's/DVD's can not be trusted more that ten years, other places I have read that the good quality ones can last 75 - 200 years. Are external hard drives any better?
|
|
|
|
|
"Can last." I think their designed lifespan is about 50 years when stored in specific conditions. But this is jut the theory... I wouldn't trust high quality, properly stored CDR/DVD-R for more than 10 years.
I have CDRs that became unreadable after 5 years of storage in good conditions (dark place, no extreme temperatures) and I have HDDs laying around for ten years (or more) and readable without problems.
Counting the costs - HDDs are are about about 3-4% more expensive per GB, but:
- need lesst storage space
- have much easier and faster access
- can be reused for something else
I was considering 5400rpm 500GB 2,5" SATA drives, without cases, just one e-sata "docking station" for putting bare disks in.
So my choice is HDDs.

CD/DVD is not what I would call a reliable medium - they are easy to damage, and can suffer from difficuties in reading on different hardware - particularly if written on older gear, they may read fine until you have to change the DVD reader - I've had that a few times and it's a PITA.
HDD's are a better bet, but have you considered storing them on the net? Pick two independent storage sites, and back em up to both. Your own copy can then be wherever you want, with reasonable security.

I do have access to storage on the net, and I do use it. But for large quantities of data I find it time consuming.

Uploading is slow, but if you zip them in chunks, it should be possible to just start it off and run away to do something more interesting!

Don't worry too much. I used to store programs on cassette tape for my old computer. The tapes I used were even old in 1978. By all estimates those old tapes should be garbage by now, but the old computer still loads them. And for those which don't load anymore I have a program that samples the tapes over the sound card and then analyzes the waveforms and reconstructs the binaries.
My strategy would be simply to have two or more copies. If they start to degrade it's unlikely that the same file will be corrupt on every copy.

Until about 2 years ago I still had a working Commodore PET with a dedicated tape drive and a 1541 Disk Drive (5.25") that still worked.

Yes, I also have a few C64s and Ataris(400 - 130XE) and they all work fine. The estimates about the media's lifetime are apparently very cautious.

I use external HDD and Google cloud storage. I figure the chances of burglary/fire/asteroid falling on my house are much bigger than Google misplacing my photos

I'm using external Hard-drives, as small as possible.
i make a real backup every 12-18 months; normally, when the time a backup is needed the drive that i have are too small so I buy a new one, bigger and backup the data, move the old old around and use the new drive.
Also, never underestimate the power of the trashcan ... every couple months, I go through(sp?) my collection and delete image that are irrelevant.
side note : Image management :
if you shoot raw, "process" the images you want to keep and export to jpg (highest quality/size) and delete the originals) you will save a lot of HD space.
When I come back from a long day of shooting, I dump everything on the computer :
- first pass : delete all out-of-focus and bad composition images (on the same day). (10, 15%)
- second pass (couple days after the shoot): delete all duplicates images (10-15%)
- third pass : delete everything that does not bring anything new from the event (if that is the case), pick the best images to export to facebook (mostly people) and/or flickr (mostly better quality artsy-ish images)
- fourth pass (couple of months later) : delete all that does not mean anything to you.
That means that after a normal day of shooting, I can delete about 90% of all images that I take on one day, a bit more if I'm doing the same kind of events week after week; or shooting the same people.

I'll stick with CDs/DVDs.
I might also suggest flash drives or SD cards -- which you could put in a digital frame to display the contents.

Archival quality DVD's work fine, however expect to upgrade them to new media every 5-10 years. Not just because the media might go bad but because old formats become a risk as well. As an example, getting stuff off of 5-1/4" floppies isn't easy now.
I originally had photos on CD's which I upgraded to DVD's (reducing the number of discs significantly). Recently I've upgraded those DVD's to Blu-Rays again significantly reducing the number of discs.
I expect there'll be something else in the next 5-10 years to upgrade to.
Cheers,
Drew.

I like DVD's because they are inconvenient. That is, there are many you have to put your data onto. That also means if one goes bad, the rest will be fine and can still be read. If something goes wrong with a hard drive, you may lose everything.
Hopefully soon I'll be moving to blu-ray.

As I left the flat for work this morning, it was completely empty except for the three girls. All our luggage is now loaded in the car and I shall return this afternoon for the last time to lock the door, read the meters and give the keys back to the agent. It is the end.
We have been in Westminster for 5 years and had an amazing time; most of it good. We arrived with two baby girls, 1 and 4, and are leaving with two little ladies. Littlest couldn't really walk when we arrived, now she can't sit still. Most of their lives have been spent here and now it is over.
As many will now, we lost Mrs Wife's father earlier this year. Since FIL past away it hasn't been the happiest of places and, to be honest, if we were staying we wouldn't remain in that flat. But Mrs Wife is still very saddened by the fact that we are going to leave his last home. He never learnt much English beyond please and thank-you, more than most kids leave school with, but he had always loved adventure and, I guess, it was his last and biggest one.
We will cross the water tonight and are staying just outside Dunkirk. Tomorrow bright and early we'll set off, Brussels - Köln - Frankfurt - Linz - Wien - Győr, and we should arrive in Balatonfüred by the evening. 1,500 km, 15 hours, simples.
From next week I will be living back with Mummy and Daddy and I'll carry on working in London. Friday nights will be run to Luton fly home to Budapest and bed by midnight. Monday mornings I'll be getting up at 4 [3 UK time] to get back to work.
Fun! Fun! Fun!

Always sad leaving a place that had happy memories.
Best of luck.
As for the Luton Run, I suppose I can manage a few wee visits to see you off.
Get there (Luton) early on a few occasions and I can show you round the place.

Saturday 13th August, I'm flying in from NY in the moring then out to BP in the evening, maybe I manage a jet-lagged afternoon beering then. But normal Fridays I could be up there around 5 for an 8 o'clock flight.

Although it is also the start of the footy season (for us high flyers in the Blue Square Conference Premier Division), but that is not a prob.

I did wonder when I saw the date, but you are away at Telford.
What a send off for him that would have been, an afternoon at Kenilworth Road.
