I think you'll find that vmware server is free, not workstation. But it uses the same emulation, so will definitely do what you want!
In fact I'm about to run up an XP machine using Workstation to see if the wretched Samsung KIes software will play better than it does under Win7...

It is and I have been messing with the player for 3 days? Darn..
Edit:
It does not seem to be free at their site. How does one get it for free?\

The problem with virtual machines is that they don't really work well with DirectX or OpenGL apps because the video card is treated like a standard VGA adapter - unless things have changed radically snce the last time I tried...

Several of the virtual machines have 2D and 3D accelerated opengl and directx. This still comes with a performance penalty but a lot less then 100% emulated. Also several will allow you to allocate GPUs to your guest provided you have extra GPUs and that you have a processor with the support for this.

VirtualBox claims to support hardware based 3D support in virtual machines (although I never really tried it).
Might be worth a shot.

VMware Workstation is free now ...
I went to find this free version of workstation at VMWare and I only found the expensive versions of everything except for Zimbra open source, which isn't vmware.
Do you have a link?

I tried Red Alert on MS Virtual PC a few years back, it would *work* well, but multiplayer didn’t for some reason (can’t remember why) so it was a no go, Red Alert Multiplayer was amazing, we used to play every Sunday when the phone call / modem connection was 1p a minute!
Worse happened to Total Annihilation (which is an amazing game), it just crashed straight away, apparently Total Annihilation uses some special instruction that just isn’t implemented in MS VPC.
If I were to do this again, I’d use VirtualBox, it seems much faster than MS VPC.

Huh?! When you said this, I got excited and checked their website...it's not free. $189 list, current special at $141. Where did you hear it was free?

I used to play Descent - I think I'm gonna have to buy this (and a joystick).

That is a great site! (gog).
I can now blame you for 2011 being 10% less efficient than it would otherwise have been...

Well, at least your "over here" contributing in some way by paying taxes. All the jobs that went overseas are a complete loss.

Check gaming sites, or even places like Target stores. A lot of these older games have mods that will enable them to run on newer OSs, and some get actual company-blessed ports and show up on the shelves of Target and the like. My experience has been that such ports usually work better on newer, faster, more capable hardware than the old versions of the games.
You may run into some really odd issues, like having too much free disk space. I had one Win98 era game that refused to install (on 2k and XP) because there was too much free disk space. I had to temporarily fill my disk till it had less than 2GB free... and now we all know what that short sighted programmer did wrong
Have fun.. at least it'll keep you ungainfully entertained for a while

At the very least Red Alert[^] (and others) is free for download, and should run on XP (and Win7?)...
Not sure if this helps - just throwin it out there.

... for me in Q/A today.
Ya try to help people, and all they do is throw feces at you from their cage...

Yeah, I'm a glutton for punishment. I'm sure most people don't like having their laziness dragged kicking and screaming into the harsh light of day.

Most people don't know how hard it is to be a positive example for others. I try to inspire greatness, but for some folks, it just doesn't stick.

I've found the problem. When they throw the feces at you, you need to throw it back immediately so it will stick. Obviously you're waiting too long, and it gets too dry to do so.
