It is a satire on French Society.
It tells the tale of a man who was indocrinated with optimism by his mentor, Dr Pangloss, but who then travels around and is dispirited and becomes a realist.
It was written in the 1700's but could easily apply to today.

I think it might be about time to ban New Zealanders from this competition because they have the advantage of having been awake all day where as those of us who live in the civilised part of the world are still rising from our slumber. Also they do unseemly things to sheep. OK the real reason is one of them is to good at it.
