If it feels like someone stabbed you in the kidney with a knife, and it goes away when you press it or stretch out, what could that be?
- Appendix: ruled out by pressing the lower belly and releasing it quickly (no pain)
- Kidney stones: ruled out by punching kidneys and not feeling much pain
- Gallstones: ruled out because the pain was in the wrong place (it was not in the lower abdomen or between the shoulder blades), at the wrong moment (not after eating), and I don't have any of the other symptoms either
- Pinched muscle/nerve: it could still be this AFAIK
edit: oh and normally I would ask the GF's opinion (she's a nurse), but she's in the hospital now (as a patient) so here I am posting medical questions in the lounge

A reason to go see a doctor.

Nice one
But no thanks. I'll do that when it keeps up for a couple of days. Otherwise they'll just send me away. That's happened before.

Could be a kidney stone.
You see a doctor.

The great irony being, of course, that were one to do this one would find themselves bereft of Freedom at the receiving end of a taser in short order.

I assume it didn't work for you.

Yeah, it worked great - I was very careful to stay out of school zones.

Did you wake-up this morning in your bathtub submerged in ice by any chance?

What would it mean if I did?

You could be the victim of ... Kidney Theft![^]
On a serious note:
Don't screw around with Kidney pain. It could be stones or bacterial infection, or both, and laying down just happens to take pressure off that organ, but like others have already said - GO SEE A DOCTOR. Better to be safe than sorry, and we don't want to have to read a bunch of posts from you about how your kidney exploded and messed up your keyboard and computer.

I'm going to agree with Deyan, if it's kidney stones, there's a good chance that there will be blood in your urine, and there's usually no comfortable position. At least thats been my experience(s) .

This isn't something you want to keep for a couple of days. Go see a doctor.

That is obviously the recently recognized Stake in Kidney Pie-Eyed syndrome. One easy way to stretch it out is to serve extra vegetables although pressing it is not recommended as it tends to make the pastry soggy.
Seriously though, go see the quack.

With me it was gallstones, and boy was it painful? What was worse was waiting around in a hospital gown for an ultrasound, surrounded by a bunch of pregnant women wondering who the wuss was trying to pull the gown flap over his butt crack.

Ok, but then why would I feel it in the area of my right kidney? And to borrow jeron1's logic, are there any comfortable positions when you have gallstones?
It's not I don't like your input, I'm just trying to eliminate some of the possibilities

That's roughly where I felt the pain, and there are no comfortable positions.

It can be a kidney stone, or can be a urinary tract infection. Only a doctor can say if it's one or another.
Drink a lot of water, and go see a doctor NOW. If it's an urinary tract infection, you'll be thankful that you didn't wait until it gets worse, believe me.
Both problems can turn into the greatest pain humans can experience. I've been there and it's a torture.
Again, don't wait, go see a doctor NOW.

How long would it take to get worse? It's already been a day and a half

Don't know but he's right, waiting on these is *really* painful. My Dad had to deal with this recently and ended up in the emergency room they got so bad. It wasn't life threatening, but it was extremely painful.
