tend to put inline code in with their HTML

No. 95% of the inline code will just be <%= Model.Value %> type statements. If you see more than this than they probably aren't doing it right. Most of the code should be in the controller to fill in the model data. The view (.aspx) then embeds model values in the page. For things like tables you may get some foreach loops in the page (view) as well.

common practice to redirect by typing in free form strings

No, but it makes the urls are more RESTfull.

couldn't some sort of autogenerator create a list of those, allowing the redirects to be strongly typed to be only valid values

No. There is a 1:1+ relationship between a Controller method and site url(s). Remeber, some of your query parameters now become path elements. e.g. instead of site.com/article?id=101 you have site.com/article/101. It becomes impractical, and counter productive, to try and generate a definitive list of valid urls.

[EDIT] The redirects are strongly typed via the routes you map in global.asax.cs RegisterRoutes(). For routes that take parameters, the controller method should redirect invalid queries to an error page.

The idea that I can be presented with a problem, set out to logically solve it with the tools at hand, and wind up with a program that could not be legally used because someone else followed the same logical steps some years ago and filed for a patent on it is horrifying.
