Was wondering why I start early and reach later from SF to NY than NY to SF, and then it stuck me about the time zone difference

Time zones account for relative not actual time.
There is about 1hr difference in actual flight time due to the jet stream.

Going NY->SF ~6 3/4 hrs flying _against_ the jet stream
Going SF->NY ~5 3/4 hrs flying _with_ the jet stream
...cmk

The idea that I can be presented with a problem, set out to logically solve it with the tools at hand, and wind up with a program that could not be legally used because someone else followed the same logical steps some years ago and filed for a patent on it is horrifying.
