Was browsing the "Question time" widget and saw a question that I followed. The article had been here for some time so had lots of comments. The one comment that caught my eye was titled "My vote of 1" where the poster included in his comments, "Great control by the way".

Might be he was just joking about 1 vote and voted 5... I have seen many post like that, but in the post they will clear that 'not really 1... but a 5'

Could be but this did not seem to be the case. At least he didn't say so.Why is common sense not common?

There is plenty of chlorine in the water supply. Maybe there is too much.

The stupidest thing I saw today was on my way home. An 18-wheeler was hauling a HUGE roll of cable and was going down a rural highway. He had come up to an intersection with another highway and there was stop lights. His load was taller than the clearance of the stop lights. He was stuck trying to figure out how to get through. Don't blame me. I voted for Chuck Norris.

Why is 1 bad and 5 good?

On a scale of 1 to 10, how clear is it for 1 to be good?
Rank the numbers 1-5 according to their goodness.

In most european countries 1 = Grade A, 5 = Grade E. (6 = F was introduced in Germany only a few years ago. Well, 10 or so...)
Also, do you prefer 1 point or 10 points?
My point is: the direction is arbitrary. It's not hard to figure out which one was chosen here, but with the gazillion of votes / day on CP, such a mixup isn't a of a skyfalldown event.

A bit more than 10. We had grade 6 already during my early schooldays in the mid-eighties."I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by." (DNA)

Would it help if instead of a number it was shown graphically as 1-5 bobs? 3x12=36
2x12=24
1x12=12
0x12=18

Makes sense to me; the article could have completely sucked, but the code was good. See that a lot here on CP. (MSDN magazine used to have a related problem; very long winded articles with a few nuggets of great information scattered throughout. Okay, that pretty much describes most computer articles that were paid by the word and most developer conferences I've been to.)

So I followed through the Safari link, books is always a good thing.
Is it just me or is $22 per month rather expensive. They seem to assume that a subscriber is going to read up to 4 books a month, bloody hell I'm lucky to read 1 book every 4 months. I've had a WPF books for over a year and haven't got through the first few chapters.Never underestimate the power of human stupidity

What! - so who do they pay, the bloody publishers I suppose who then dribble a small amount to the authors.

Thanks for that link, I've been trying to get Scalzi's 2nd book in eBook format for some time and cannot find it. I'm currently sitting on the rest of the series trying to get hold of it. I may have to buy paper again!
Not only will I be interested in his views but I may even get some info about the book, or just plain bug him through the comments.Never underestimate the power of human stupidity

Even worse is this little gem that appears on the right ot my page.
This title is not available for customers from your location in:

So if I find a pirated copy I will definitely download it. This is the height of stupidity. Limited format and regional restrictions Never underestimate the power of human stupidity

While that is partly true, there is still a huge desire/need for actual printed books which will continue for a long time. The ebook format is an interesting medium since it removes the obstacle of distribution. It does seem that the industry (or at least some publishers) is starting to look more seriously at things like ebooks and print-on-demand technologies.
