my switch to control porch lights is damaged due to a lightning in my area month ago.
so I bought a new switch from Home Depot. today I spent time to find out how to program this switch.
the instruction manual is written well as a programmer's user guide. I read through all the steps and did some highlights for important tips.
one press on ON/OFF button caused a click event. every event needs to be programmed. so I can program 7 days by programming 14 events, but I select ALL(they are same everyday).
event #1 is DUSK at 7:53PM. event #2 is DAWN at 5:31AM. it looks like macro definition in C/C++.
once DUSK and DAWN are defined, the left is to program these events.
after about an hour, I finished all installation of wall box. turned on general lighting in outside power control panel, all works!
WARNING: you must turn off general lighting power from outside power control panel!!!

I skipped this: built-in timer will trigger event#1 at DUSK, trigger event#2 at DAWN.
my previous timer does not use battery. so each outage will cause timer to delay timing. so after long time, all schedules are corrupted....

I'm happy you had a fulfilling day. Two observations though:
1. You report this on the day you did it. You have at least another 6 days before you can confirm your programming is bug-free; and then only if you're up before dawn and go to bed after dusk; in fact watch it continuously for 24 hours, all 7 days. Who knows what it's been doing while you weren't around?
2. Or, you could save money, time, energy, plastic and no doubt all sorts of scarce minerals (in short, the planet) by just sticking with a manual on/off switch. If it's dark and you're expecting a visitor soon, turn it on. Otherwise, turn it off. If its purpose is as a security light, you're just helping thieves see their way around. The moths will thank you for it too, though the spiders may go a little hungrier.

your insight is great:
I select 'ALL' to make everyday to be the on same schedule. so I set event#1 : DUSK (at 7:53PM) -> ON, event#2: DAWN (at 5:31AM). this forms into an automaton: ON(DUSK) <==> OFF(DAWN). manual mode can be used any time because of its priority 
I am still in validation stage. so far so good.

So the first time I logged onto the 'public' internet (outside of ARPANET) I was sometimes in the early 1980's. There was no HTTP protocol and we simply logged into 'Bulletin boards[^]' via RelayNet and FidoNet.
There is nothing new under the sun[^] and I can tell you that the first time I logged into a BBS system I was immediately inundated with sexual content and in the early 1980's I didn't know how to respond to this so I immediately logged out. There are some moments in life that you never forget, this was one of them.
I'm drinking red wine again, like I did last weekend so please excuse the typos.

I was thinking about this over another glass of wine and I want to share as little bit more for those who might be interested in the very early internet. In the 1980's it was much more difficult to share pictures (before the Gopher protocol[^]) and there were absolutely zero videos. So the sexual content on the bulletin board systems back in the 1980's were individuals telling stories in text chat.
Yep, now maybe you can see why I logged out.
There were 'normal' chat rooms but they were quite boring before HTTP.
