When I sign up to a site that requires a password, I generally use a unique email address. (I own my domain name so can have unlimited email addresses; there's a catch-all that routes non-existent addresses to my "real" mailbox, but retains the original "to" address. This way if I get spam addressed to "codeproject@[mydomain]" I can be pretty certain that it was CP that leaked my details / sold my address (for instance).
The only pain is if, when contacting them for any reason, they insist on having a sending address that matches what you signed up with. But they're few and far between.

How many of our friends in England are aware of the American baseball games that are going to happen this weekend in London?
The New York Yankees are going to play the Boston Red Sox. Baseball is a big hit in America, Latin America, Japan and southeast Asia. Now they want to introduce it to Europe!
Do you know anyone who is going?
The difficult we do right away...
...the impossible takes slightly longer.

Careful what you wish for - they tried to introduce basketball to a northern country and look what happened

I believe we already have it: only here it's called "Rounders" and is played by schoolgirls?

It is England and the royals are going so everyone 'knows' someone that is going.

It's really hard to think that anyone would get taken in by this: Your debit card could catch fire; send it to India.[^]

I fell for it. I wanted my debit card to feel much softer and he said he'd precushion it for me. I'm still waiting for it to be mailed back.

sadly some might will, little old ladies and suchlike.
me moms in an old peoples village, some community group organized an event
(free tea & scone so they turned up, 50 or so people),
the question was asked "how many of you were scammed in the last year"
my mom expected maybe 1, at most 2 ...about 1/3 of the group put up their hands.
some of the scams described were pretty damn obvious, there's many gullible lonely widows
(mom not, heck even I couldn't wiggle 10 cents of her for a 'life saving ice cream' or similar, the number of times I starved to death: uncountable ... ah but I digress)

Who'd fall for the Nigerian prince?
Who'd fall for the last remaining relative?
Who'd fall for the lottery winner?
Who'd fall for the virus on your computer?
Who'd fall for the naughty pictures they somehow have of you?
Sadly, plenty of people, or they'd stop doing it
In fact, an IT manager at a very high profile customer fell for it a few years back, got his computer locked
If IT managers fall for it (and I don't think the good ones will), the less IT inclined will certainly fall for it.

It's perfectly safe; it says at the bottom of the letter "Your private details will not be compromised at any time". So that's OK then. Does bring a new meaning to 'hot card' though...
