I agree, sport is a necessity in socialization and also for recreation. Sitting in front of a computer at least 8 hours a day during the week I need to move when I can. Also yes sport does bring people together. So do movements of any kind, sub-cultures any kind of sharing of the same ideals.
But many times country officials put too many resources into sports and neglect health care or school systems for example. Both of those are not exactly abysmal, but not all that good in Slovenia. But we did have to build a new sports centre a few years ago. Not to mention all the people who lost their money, because the government couldn't pay for all the work they had done.
On the other hand when I was going to elementary and high school, I made a lot of friends playing basketball and we still play every now and then.
I am not trying to diminish the importance of Sport, but you have to look at the whole picture. The activity itself is very necessary. Professional sport takes it overboard a lot of times. Not saying it's the fault in the sport alone, but with us the people.

If they put a set of hub gears (e.g. Sturmey Archer) in this[^], I'd be sorely tempted.
Not sure I'd want a full-sized one, though. It'd distract cr@p drivers too much.

That's a tricky one! How many letters?
How do you know so much about swallows? Well, you have to know these things when you're a king, you know.

I agree, but entertainment is usually valued more than forwarding the human race or saving lives etc.
Mostly because the saving lives you don't see until someone directly saves your life - until then it is easy to be oblivious or not value the service.
As for forwarding the human race, we don't get to see the results quickly enough and if we do, they are too complicated or bring change. That is the one thing that we fear a lot.
Also wars happen elsewhere so it's easy to ignore soldiers risking their lives.
To be clear I do not condone this, just acknowledge that this kind of mentality exists. I fully agree with what you meant here.
A lot of people are more interested in what celebrities eat for breakfast, rather than can someone who works an honest days work even eat breakfast.
EDIT: Oh and we love distractions - to be entertained, makes life easier.

No, they do not do any of those things. They just attract enough fools who pay those salaries plus some humble profit.

Curious, the HTML in my both "My Settings" and "Click to edit signature" are both:

You might have spotted a featurette there. The open in a new window actually works though, perhaps it is a cunning plan by Chris to keep you here

That's why I watch the rugger. 6 Nations kick off tonight with the Welsh trying to intimidate the English; a skill the England XV are capable of without the help of any opposition. Then tomorrow, Italy will lose at home and Scotland will capitulate in Paris.
As a side note, Biggle's geography teacher will be playing for the Welsh. In the ladies match on Sunday in Swansea.

I've been saying that for years about footballers and other entertainers but no-one wants to listen.
Who is worth more to the world: a Christiaan Barnard, or a David Beckham? And who gets the better lifestyle?

Professional football is not harmfull. If it inspres people to play, it is even healthy. So why critize it?
Do you blame your local pub owner for selling something that is unhealthy, namely alcohol? As long as what we do for a living is legal it makes no sence to rate it. With suregeons on top and down to professional football players, if you want.

Exercise is good for you, sport is where you get hurt, and where you waste taxpayers' money.
