Given that Reacher's RIFed out of the forces, I reckon that Liam Neeson would be a reasonable choice.

I seem to recall having read a rumour somewhere that he wanted to retire?!?! But given the number of movies he's currently got in post-production, I guess that it's not going to be anytime soon...

If we can ignore the height factor, this is my list.
1. Tom Hardy
2. Ryan Gosling
3. Sean Bean
4. Ray Stevenson
5. Kevin McKidd
Otherwise
Dolph Lundgren and Hugh Jackman are perfect for the role except they are more muscle than brain and Jack Reacher is both (which is why he is difficult to cast).

Now, this is not because I train karate in the same club as Dolph, but I have to disagree with you on the brains issue: He's got an academical degree in chemical engineering, and is said to have an IQ of more than 180 (he claims himself that he doesn't know the exact number), so Dolph is just as much brain as muscles. He might not always give that impression in his roles, though...

Exactly, we are talking about the characters here and not a actual person. so in order to play smart person, he should at-least 'look smart' on the screen, and he looks like a brute (both of them are). Imagine him playing a role in a movie 'Social Network'.

Only cast Sean Bean if you are planning on Jack Reacher dying...
I do like Tom Hardy and Ray Stevenson though.

Yes, his recent death was very shocking.
He plays awesome number 2 role, and he is always better than number 1 guy, even when the number 1 guy is a James Bond.
I recommend watching movie Drive and Place Beyond Pines, to judge Ryan Gosling's performance. He plays 'serious' very well.

FES! Christopher Biggins would be a more convincing choice. At least he's less camp than Cruise.

Much discussion when the midget was cast, don't remember any on the finished film, but I watched it this week. Had no intention of watching it, but as it was on, little else was, my curiosity got the better of me.
I almost managed not to yell out "WRONG!" whenever Cruise was on screen, and he is so very, very wrong, and not just his height, everything of his portrayal goes against the images I had from the books.
I just cannot see how a fan of the books can enjoy the film.
But aside from that, it is a very poor film. Good story almost carries it, and the opening scene is very well done, but from then on it is often dull, unnecessarily long, and has some truly farcical moments that are just really, really dumb. Some very poor performances too, the female lead is just there as cleavage and says or does almost nothing of interest, although that is not the actresses fault.
Anyone else seen it?

I agree with you on the Cruise/Reacher issue, but apart from that, I quite liked the movie. If you disregard the Reacher aspect, I actually think they've managed to create a good action movie - much like the old Lethal Weapon movies.

But.
The bit with the bloke trying to chew his own thumb off when told to chew his fingers off "You don't start with the thumb".
The bus that somehow got through a police road block to pick him up when he got out of the car whilst it was still moving.
The two plonkers beating each other up because they were so excited to beat him up. Absolute, nonsensical farce.
The best marksman ever who couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo once Reacher got in his sights.
And talking of that, the convenient Cruise shaped boulders that had been placed in exactly the right places for him to run between and hide behind.
There were some cool bits, and a few very witty lines, but just far, far, far too much dumb stuff.
And I didn't give a sh*t about anyone in it.

Indeed, I've seen the film. Having read the book, I was waiting for them to do the reveal on the sniper issue (I'm not going to give either part away so as not to spoil it for others). They totally borked that.
Yup - the fight scene outside the bar was the most farcical part of it all - you can imagine a 250lb 6 foot 5er carrying it off. Cruise ---- well no. The disturbing thing is that they've already said they are going to do other Reacher movies.
Oh, and as for the Zec. They completely avoided the whole "hideous disfigurement" aspect from the book.
